Album: Breach (PT. Universal Music Indonesia/2000) Judging from the lyrics of the Wallflowers's songs, Jakob Dylan (yes, he's Bob's son) -- the band's frontman, guitarist and songwriter -- apparently has never had a day of fun in his life. The first track on this album, Letters From The Wasteland, includes these lines: "I wake up sick as you abandon me into these fields of rank ... Now I send back letters from the wasteland home, where I slow dance to this romance on my own." On another song, I've Been Delivered, we hear: "Nothing's hard as getting free from places I've already been ... I've been the puppet, I've been the strings, I know the vacant face it brings." These cheery lines are sung by a weary-sounding Jakob, as the sound of a banjo saunters in. Has his life really been such agony? Dylan the younger formed The Wallflowers a decade ago and shortly thereafter the group signed a record deal and released its self-titled debut album in 1992. But the album failed to make an impact and quickly sank from view. The third album, Breach, offers a classic rock style passed down from the likes of Tom Petty, the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen. It also features backing vocals by Frank Black and Elvis Costello. As in the second album, Breach features simple but mature tunes which prove that Dylan is more than just another rock star's son.(Hera Diani) |
