Comes With A Smile
interview (1998)
|
Looking
now at your debut alongside For All The Beautiful People, do you see a natural
progression? You know, I’ve never done that before but, yeah, it’s pretty
scary. Eight years gone, never to come back. I don’t know what the fuck’s been
going on - the last five years especially - it just keeps leading us on and on
and on and on. I don’t know whether I should jump off or not, or continue. I don’t
know read the rest of the interview here |

"Everybody
Wants to Know" in the CMJ Charts
|
|
"everybody wants to know" is currently at #21 on the College Music Journal (CMJ) charts. It entered at 45 in June and as of Oct. 16 was still at 21 - that's longer than any other Swell album. Numerous radio stations across the nation and abroad have at least one of the songs from the new LP on their daily playlist. |

Copper Press Article
|
|
Issue
six of Copper Press contains an amazing,
in-depth, eight-page feature on Swell by Eric Ianelli, replete with photos
provided by Sean Kirkpatrick. "Swell." The name is shibboleth to an indie subculture, a handful of inquisitive folks who've stumbled across an obscure band engendered in San Francisco in the late-Eighties. Beleaguered by label trouble, lack of funds, contention among its members, and a devil-may-care business ethic, the story of Swell is plotted like a spy thriller: Mysterious disappearances, radical and unexplained changes, adventures crisscrossing the globe, deception and sabotage. But it has also been a Superman sort of saga, too. For over a decade, Swell has led a double life- mild-mannered and anonymous in America, celebrated and acclaimed in Europe. Swell, in one of its many protean shapes, is still putting out albums. Over two thousand miles away from his former bandmates, the soft-spoken, sardonic David Freel has popped up in Chicago and taken the band name for himself. With the help of hired guns (Mark Signorelli, co-producer; Rey Washam, drums), his efforts have culminated in two new releases. The first is Feed, a seven-song EP on Beggars Banquet, which appeared in Europe in November of 2000. It was followed in April 2001 by a full-length called Everybody Wants to Know, featuring five of the same tracks... Get
High (remix) (American Records promo single) Reelin' in the Years (Recorded live in Brugge, Belgium - 07/10/99) You can find more live Swell mp3's at Is That Important?* *the tempo of the 1997 concert on the site has been altered and should be listened to with this in mind (probably due to the fact that Swell were "extremely drunk" that night and seemed to play a little slower than normal. if you'd like a cassette copy of the complete show in it's original tempo and innebriated state, mail me here. |
