2) What kind of merit or demerit did you get when you belong to a
major label?
-Merit: free stuff and money. Demerit: constant throbbing headaches.
3) Recently did the band sign a contract with a new label? If so, please tell us
about it.
-Too early to give details but things are looking good
4) When do you hope to release your new album?
-Hopefully this fall
5) What is the new album like?
-We are pretty proud of it; it is different from the other albums. I wrote
a number of the songs for the record on piano, a newer development in our
music. Songs written on piano for me have a different sound and structure
than guitar-written songs--I'm playing both guitar and piano throughout the
record.
We have always played around with the recording process while making records
but on this record there was more experimentation. alot of early electronic
keyboard sounds: mellotrons, chamberlains. Odd effects and guitar and
instrument sounds. We used strings (violins, viola, cello) heavily on this
record. Jake slicter, drummer of semisonic, helped arrange the strings.
Lyrically the record is more unified than previous records. Not a single
love song on this one. The mood is a bit more "blue" and self-reflective
than our older records.
John fields produced our first record and he produced this most recent one
called "here's luck." Comparing the band and field's work between the two
records you'll see a great deal of change.
6) How does the new album differ from Seen A Ghost?
-Greatly. I wrote alot of songs on piano and I think the band went through
alot of big changes musically making this record.
7)Did the Honeydogs leave Debris because the label didn't
understand the sound of the new album?
-A few people at the label liked our record but we wanted a warmer home.
8) I think that Seen A Ghost doesn't have a taste of country music like the former
two albums.
Was this a point the band ment to make?
-My songwriting has changed over time
9) You have released nothing for three years. How do you feel?
-Like I want to get this record out soon--I got another one ready to go
10) The new album is the first album for Brian, right? What did you think of his
his job? Was it as you expected?
-Brian came in on the tail end of this last record. With the help of alot
of wine and potroast he did swimmmingly.
11) What are your future plan?
-Tour, tour, tour, record, sleep, tour....
12) By the way what made The Honeydogs play a free concert at the Quest
on March 25th, 2000?
-Money
13) Would you make a comment about each co-band (you played with at the Quest)?
-They were loud and sounded similar to each other
14) Is the Honeydogs big in Minneapolis?
-We do well in Minneapolis
15) In Minneapolis there is a tradition of post punk guitar rock like
the Repalcements and Husker Du. Do you think The Honeydogs succeed to the
tradition?
-We are a rock and roll band
16) Do you have your recommended band in the current Minneapolis scene?
-Danny Commando
17) Why are there so many good bands in Minneapolis? Would you tell us your
opinion?
-It's in the water I think
18) We'd like to know about the movie HERE ON EARTH.
What made The Honeydogs appear on that film?
Did you enjoy appearing on a film? Have you already seen the movie?
If you have, how did you feel when you saw yourself on film?
-"Here on earth" was filmed last summer. It was an interesting process,
watching a movie being made. We learned early after finishing filming that
we were not going to be in it. We were relieved--the movie looked pretty
bad.
