Some of you may know this already since subscribers are already getting
their copies of issue #39, but I wanted to make sure the list heard this
before the rest of the general public. As of August of this year, the
Duelist will cease publication and become solely an online magazine (at
www.Duelistmagazine.com). Our last paper issue will be #41.
There are many reasons for this decision. The Duelist has over the years
become a high level strategy magazine that was really only appealing to
a small segment of the Magic population. It also included information on
games that many Magic players were not interested in, but those games
both deserved a chance to be seen and had loyal followings.
Unfortunately, due to space and financial constraints, we couldn't give
the Magic players and all the other players enough information targeted
at them to make the magazine work. The Web provides all the space we
need and is much cheaper to produce. We can provide all the information
that Magic players want and run articles on our other games (including
BTech, Netrunner, and VTES).
Now, I don't want you to think that we're forgetting the new and casual
players. The online magazine will also have information about Arena and
beginner level articles. Plus, there is something coming that should
make all Magic players very happy. I can't say any more about this right
now, but read my editorial next month (issue #40) and you'll find out.
Also, I will be at Origins this July to unveil this new, great thing.
For those of you wondering about what will happen to your subscriptions,
we will be sending all subscribers a letter in the very near future that
will detail the options for your remaining issues (one of which will be
a refund on those issues). I can't tell you any more because we haven't
yet determined all the options.
If you have any questions, you can email me directly atwill@wizards.com
. Thank you for all your comments on this list in the last few years.
I'm sure the list will continue (at least until we get the bulletin
board set up on the website).
