I asked God for strength, that I
might achieve -
I was make weak, that I might learn
humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might
do greater things -
I was given infirmity, that I might
do better things
I asked for riches, that I might be happy -
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the
praise of men -
I was given weakness, that I might
feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might
enjoy life -
I was given life, that I might
enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for -
but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers
were answered.
I am, among all people, most richly blessed!

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear;
what a privilege to carry
everything to God in pray'r!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit;
Oh, what needless pain we bear!
All because we do not carry
everything to God in pray'r.
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in pray'r.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness;
take it to the Lord in pray'r.
Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumber'd with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in pray'r.
Do our friends despise, forsake us?
Take it to the Lord in pray'r.
In His arms He'll take and shield us
and we'll find sweet solace there.
