AMAZING GRACE

Oh how I love this song. This beautiful song has special meaning to many including me. In my darkest moments because of this song I knew God loved me. But the story behind it is also a sign of the loving Grace of God.

Between 1760 and 1770 this hymn was written by an English minister. His name was John Newton. When he was a child he was rebellious and constantly in trouble. When he was a young man he drank excessively and went through periods of angry violent behavior.

When he was in his twenties he became involved in the slave trade and managed a "Slave Factory". Later he became a captain of a slave ship, which made voyages from Great Britain to Africa where he loaded the slaves and took them to America to sell.

During one of these trips the ship was in a terrible storm and John Newton asked God for help.

In 1745 John Newton left the slave trade because of illness and the long separations from his family. He made a change in his life and decided to become a minister. At age 39 he was ordained. This man who had been in the business of selling humans found his way to God. He wrote this beautiful song.

Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me,

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

"Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved,

How precious did that grace appear,

The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come

'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

When we've been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We've no less days to sing God's praise,

Than when we've first begun.
