Gargantua
(1998)
In 1954, Japan unleashed Godzilla, later released in the U.S. with chunks of plot cut out to make room for Raymond Burr. There have been so many Godzilla movies over the years, Hollywood decided to get into the act with two movies in 1998, a lame remake of “Godzilla” starring Matthew Broderick of WarGames as a wimpy biologist in New York; and this one, starring Adam Baldwin of Predator 2 as a wimpy biologist studying a family of mutant reptiles on the ocean floor near a Polynesian island.
When a two-foot baby lizard comes ashore, mom and dad follow. Soon the authorities are investigating a series of mysterious drownings, followed by special effects from beyond the budget. Originally made as a TV-movie.
Additional cast:
Julie Carmen of Fright Night, Bobby Hosea, Emile Hirsch.
Directed by Bradford May of “Asteroid” (1997), Darkman 3 (1995), “Darkman 2: The Return of Durant,” “Marilyn & Bobby: Her Final Affair,” “Lethal Lolita-Amy Fisher: My Story” (1992), and “Mortal Sins” (also 1992, in which Christopher Reeve hears the confession of a serial killer).
The cinematographer is John Stokes, who remade Journey To The Center Of The Earth the following year. “Gargantua” turns up on TV and cable from time to time, and even on Telemundo (dubbed into Spanish).
"Gargantua" is available on video and on DVD
