THE COMEBACK
Talk about a Comeback! Nine years after its lone season aired, the HBO comedy series The Comeback returns November 9, 2014 with Lisa Kudrow (Emmy® winner for Friends) reprising her Emmy®-nominated role as reality-TV pioneer Valerie Cherish. Michael Patrick King (Emmy® winner for HBO’s Sex and the City), who co-created The Comeback with Kudrow, spoke with us about the long-awaited return of this beloved series that was the first of its kind when it debuted.
HBO: It must have been a good feeling to bring The Comeback back.
MPK: Let’s just say it was very thrilling over the nine years to see it sort of stand up and walk, and then run. A lot of people put their heart and soul into shows and a lot of shows don’t get a second season. Some shows don’t even get a pilot made. Lisa and I worked really hard on The Comeback and we thought we had something that was unique to what we wanted to say. I’m thrilled we’re back at HBO. To me, that’s the best story.
HBO: What do you have in store for Season 2?
MPK: What we wanted to do with the second Comeback is actually reflect the landscape of where television is right now and also to do something new that Valerie hadn’t experienced and it seems to be a dark dramedy on HBO where she’s totally a fish out of water. No audience, no censors, creative expression, darker. So we tried to create a situation that would reflect in a meta way our coming back to HBO and Valerie arriving at HBO
HBO: Where is Valerie at as things begin?
MPK: Valerie has decided—after seeing a show on Bravo where there were real people sitting on a couch just watching a show—that reality TV has run out of ideas and it’s time for her to come back. So she’s making a pilot presentation that shows where she’s been for nine years and she’s decided she’s evolved enough to get back into the reality TV game because she now understands it, that she was only playing a version of herself, not herself. What happens over the course of the first episode is she winds up getting cast in a show written by her nemesis, Paulie G., on HBO.
HBO: Where do things go from there?
MPK: We start with all the main characters having evolved into a different place. Valerie thinks she has understanding now of what reality TV is, how she took herself too seriously; Paulie G. has gone through two rehabs and he thinks he is healthier and he has come back to claim his right as a serious writer; Jane the reality show producer has moved past show business having won an Academy Award® for a documentary and she thinks show business is done—she’s raising rescued horses; and Mark, Valerie’s husband, has evolved into a nicer place with his wife where she’s really not acting, they’re just a regular couple for nine years. What we try to do over the next couple of episodes is show what happens when these same people get in the same tornado again. Read Part 2 of our interview with Michael Patrick King in next month’s issue. Season 2 of The Comeback premieres Sunday, November 9 at 10 PM. (AC,AL) TVMA-:41
