Doctor Who on BBC America
After a one-off attempt to revive Doctor Who in 1996, it seemed as if the good Doctor would be "lost in space" forever. Enter Russell T. Davies, creator of the ground-breaking Queer as Folk, which featured, among others, a Doctor Who-obsessed character based, just a little, on Russell himself. The rest, fortunately, is time-travel nirvana. Played by Christopher Eccleston in its premiere season in 2005, the new Doctor firmly reestablished his Time-lordship in the person of David Tennant over the following three seasons and numerous specials. Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith made his debut in Spring 2010.
Season One - Roaming the galaxy in his time/space ship, the TARDIS, the Doctor is a champion of good against the forces of evil. Christopher Eccleston's Doctor is wise and funny, cheeky and brave. An alien and a loner, his detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world is in danger. His new assistant is Rose (Billie Piper), a shop-girl from the present day. From the moment they meet, the Doctor and Rose are soul-mates; they understand and complement each other. In Series 1, as they travel together through time, encountering new and old adversaries, the Doctor shows her things beyond imagination. She starts out as an innocent, unfettered by worldly concerns. But she ends up an adventurer who, by the end of the series, can never go home again...
Season Two - David Tennant steps into the role of the Doctor for Series 2, and is proving to be the most popular Time Lord to date. David's Doctor is full of restless energy, he's also quirky, mischievous, charming and stylish, and the rapport between him and his feisty assistant Rose is stronger than ever. In Series 2, they meet Queen Victoria, an evil race of Cat Women and the dreaded Cybermen; the foundations are laid for the spin-off series Torchwood; but by the end of the series Rose finds herself parted from the Doctor for ever.
Season Three - Series 3 finds the Doctor with a smart, sassy and sexy new assistant, medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), whom he meets when her present-day London hospital is transported to the moon. Their adventures include meeting William Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in Elizabethan London, a nightmarish underground world of gridlocked cars and the return of the Doctor's sworn enemies, the Daleks.
Season Four - Go fourth and enjoy! The new Doctor Who returns for a fourth season with a familiar face. In the BAFTA® - and Hugo Award-winning series, Catherine Tate (Big Train, Bleak House) reprises her role as Donna Noble from the 2006 Christmas Special. Now reunited, the tenth Doctor (David Tennant, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Donna travel back to Pompeii in 79 A.D. to investigate a series of grisly murders on the eve of the infamous eruption. Look for previous companions Rose Tyler (Billie Piper, Mansfield Park) and the feisty Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman, Torchwood). DVD includes many extras.
The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars and The End of Time, Part One & Two.
The four imaginative, action-packed specials are the farewell to star David Tennant, and Russell T Davies, the mastermind behind the rebirth of the modern Doctor Who. The specials culminate in the dramatic regeneration of the Doctor, giving fans their first glimpse of the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. 100 years ago, the universe's greatest library was sealed off, leaving only a warning: "Count the shadows." But now the shadows are moving again. The Doctor and Donna must uncover the terrible truth behind the Nodes and the horrifying Data Ghost, to find the library's secret; confront the monsters of the Dark, the vicious Vashta Nerada. With guest stars Alex Kingston, Colin Salmon and Steve Pemberton. At the end of part 1 Donna is separated from the Doctor and finds herself in a mysterious hospital administered by Doctor Moon. Alex Kingston is best known for playing Dr. Elizabeth Corday in 158 episodes of the medical drama ER. The main library scenes for the episode were filmed at Swansea Library and Brangwyn Hall, Swansea; the world's largest library--the Library of Congress--holds approximately 29 million books. He played an actor who once played a time traveller on children's television in a show called The Amazing Lollipop Man. He now finds his life consists of giving DVD commentaries and posing for photos in his old costume, though nowadays he can't do the buttons up. The episode is written by David Semple, who told DoctorWhoNews.com: "Sylvester gives an extraordinary performance: funny, touching and incredibly inventive. He also manages to appear 40 years old in one scene and 60-something in the next, despite the fact that Doctors is shot in a day and he filmed the young scenes in the morning and the aged ones in the afternoon."
