WOMEN'S BASEBALL

The 2006-07 summer women's competition consists of Division 1 (12 teams to split into Div 1 and Div 2 after December 9), Division 3 and Division 4. Beginning in summer 2006-07 is the new under 15 girls baseball league, with the first games being played on October 28, 2006.

In Australia, we have the National Championships every Easter, where teams from different states compete in a tournament run over a week. An international tournament was run here in Melbourne for a week in December 2002, with teams from USA, Canada and Japan coming down to play at the new baseball complex at Geelong. Australia won the gold medal, with Canada winning silver and Japan winning bronze. The Aussie Stars came in fourth and USA were fifth. USA actually consisted of a team from the Women's Baseball League and four additional players from Australia.

There is also the Women's World Series. It was run for the first time in 2001 in Toronto, Canada, with USA winning gold, Japan silver and Australia bronze (grand final score USA 9, Japan 1). In 2002, it was held in Tampa, USA, and the Aussies won the gold, Japan silver and USA bronze (grand final score Australia 7, Japan 4). The 2003 Women's World Series was originally scheduled to be held in Uozu City, Japan, but was moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. The grand final was played between Japan and Australia, with Japan winning 4 to 1. The 2004 Women's World Series was held in Uozu City, Japan, with four countries making their debut: India, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong. Japan beat USA in the grand final, 14 to 4. The International Baseball Federation organised the inaugral World Cup of Women's Baseball, played in Edmonton, Canada from July 30 to August 8. Participating teams were Australia, USA, Japan, Canada and Chinese Taipei. USA won gold and Japan silver, with USA winning the gold medal game 2-0. Canada won the bronze, beating Australia 8-3.
