May 2, 2002:Rogers Lake Park Hike (Mendota Heights)

Join Larry Martin for a hike along the west shore of Rogers Lake in Mendota Heights and along portions of the Mendota Heights trailway system. Dakota County was established in 1849, one of the first counties in the Territory of Minnesota, but it remained Indian territory until 1853. The earliest settlement in the county was Mendota, largely due to the establishment of Fort Snelling in 1819-1820. Mendota Township, established in 1858, was initially settled by French-Canadians. Mendota Heights became a village in 1956 and became a city in 1974. Rogers Lake commemorates E. G. Rogers, who owned a farm on its southeast side in 1856.

We will start from the parking lot of the Rogers Lake Park in Mendota Heights.

If driving: Take I-35E south across the Mississippi River and exit on Highway 110 West. Proceed west about 4/10ths of a mile on Highway 110 to Lexington Avenue, and turn south (left) onto Lexington Avenue. Take Lexington Avenue south about 7/10ths of a mile to the intersection with Wagon Wheel Trail and turn east (left) onto Wagon Wheel Trail. Proceed on Wagon Wheel Drive about 4/10ths of a mile, across the bridge over I-35E, to Rogers Lake Park, 1001 Wagon Wheel Trail, on the south (right) side of the road. The group will meet in the parking lot for the park.

If coming by public transit: Take Metro Transit route(s): 67. The closest bus service point appears to be along Wagon Wheel Trail. Applicable Metro Transit Map / Bus Schedule information

The group will reconvene at a restaurant (Al Bakers, 3434 Washington Drive (South West Corner of Pilot Knob Drive and Yankee Doodle Road), Eagan MN) after the hike for dinner or dessert.
