8/3: Gun Club Lake Hike (Eagan)

8/3: Gun Club Lake Hike (Eagan)

Join the hiking group for a hike from the Cedar Avenue Bridge east along the south bank of the Minnesota River in Fort Snelling State Park, near Gun Club Lake. HIGH ROCK ISLAND, located in Mendota Township, is the site of a former sandstone quarry now part of Fort Snelling State Park. An 1879 map shows it in Slater Lake (named for James Slater, who at one time owned 647 acres nearby); the lake decreased with changes in the river channel, and the name was changed to Gun Club Lake.

From Cedar Avenue/Highway 77, just south of the Minnesota River, exit at Highway 13 and proceed north/northeast to Silver Bell Road in Eagan. Turn north (left) on Silver Bell Road and follow along as it winds to Nicols Road/Cedar Avenue/Black Dog Road East. Proceed north on Nichols Road/Cedar Avenue/Black Dog Road East to the parking area for the Jens A. Caspersen Boat Landing, underneath the south end of the Cedar Avenue/Highway 77 bridge.

The hike will be along established dirt paths used primarily by mountain bike riders

The group will recovene at a nearby restaurant for dessert or dinner afterwards.
