5/10/2001: Black Dog Park (Burnsville)

May 10, 2001: Black Dog Park (Burnsville)

Join the group for a hike from Black Dog Park around a portion of the Black Dog Reserve in the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Black Dog Lake, four miles long, lying in the bottomland of the Minnesota River and occupying a deserted river course, was named for a Dakota, Black Dog, whose village was near the northeast end of the lake. Black Dog Village, a Dakota Indian village, 1837-52, in Eagan Township, section 18; also known as Danoska; the current site of the Black Dog Power Plant.

The area is part of the flood plain of the Minnesota River, so it might be muddy in the Spring or after a measurable rain. Wear appropriate footwear if conditions are likely to be wet.

If driving: The trail head is southwest of the NSP power plant in Burnsville. From Hwy.13 , drive north on West River Hills Dr. At 19th Ave. turn left (toward the river). Follow the road down the hill to entrance of Black Dog Park. The trail head is in the northeast corner of the park. Climb the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks for a hike into the preserve.

If coming by public transit: Take Metro Transit route(s): 37W; 48B; 444. The bus service points appear to be along Cliff Road or Hwy 13. Applicable Metro Transit Map / Bus Schedule information

The group will reconvene at a nearby restaurant after the hike for dinner or dessert.
