Cancer has been on the "rise" since I first notice it when I heard a former teacher of mine from high school past away from it when I was attending college at the them time.
Summer 1997 Job Internship Experience with the American Cancer Socity
I had the opportunity to explore this when I had an internship at the American Cancer Society's state headquarters in the summer of 1997 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. My job during this 10-week long summer internship of 1997 was to help market this Hmong Patient Video (see hmong health). I was supervised by Ruth D.-Patient Services Specialist at ACS, who is currently Prostate Cancer Program Coordinator with HealthEast Cancer Care in Maplewood, MN. During my internship, I was able to increase my knowledge of "cancer" from a variety of local professionals that included:
-Nancy Grandt, an Oncology Care Management Specialist at HealthEast St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul.
-Mao Thao, who I met at a Hmong Health Care Professional Coalition Monthly Meeting at the Lao Family Community Center
-Chue Xiong, RN of Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic at the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. Xiong was on the health professionals in the focus group for the Hmong Cancer Patient Video
-Colleen Southwell, Communications Director, who is in charge of public relations and marketing for the Cancer Research Center in the University of Minnesota (Main) Twin Cities Campus in Minneapolis. View newsletter
I've met many people who died of this disease and who are currently facing this.
"I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side
I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine
[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son
I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
[Chorus]
I can only imagine [x2]
I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you"-elyrics.net

"Some of the most common symptoms of a brain tumor are headaches (headaches that wake you up in the morning), seizures in a person who does not have a history of seizures, cognitive or personality changes, eye weakness, nausea or vomiting, speech disturbances, or memory loss. While these are the most common symptoms of a brain tumor, they can also indicate other medical problems. If you are having any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment with your doctor who can give you a definitive diagnosis."

Below is an e-mail prayer request sent through my local church, which is just a sample I feel of many cancer patients. May we learn from this...

"pastor",
ANONYMOUS just called from Rochester. He asked if we could have the church pray for him again. He just began to experience pain from the cancer about a week ago, and now he is in almost constant pain. He has an appointment to see a doctor on Wednesday to see if they can give him something for the pain. The doctors at Mayo aren't doing anything about the cancer, because they have said it is too far advanced. ANONYMOUS is still asking God to heal him, and is putting his trust in God for deliverance from this cancer. So please ask people to join ANONYMOUS in prayer for healing and for relief from the pain. ANONYMOUS said that he especially needs prayer to overcome discouragement. He is being attacked in his thoughts with what might have been, and the "if onlys".
Thanks,

Did you know that charred black burnt food can contribute to cancer?
Grilling causes cancer?
Related entries: Strange & Funny BBQ News, Healthy Grilling
According to this article by Dana Farber eating grilled food can increase your risk of cancer. Isnt that just peachy? I mean what doesnt cause cancer these days?
"Research has shown that high-heat grilling can convert proteins in red meat, pork, poultry and fish into heterocyclic amines, chemicals that have been linked to a number of cancers. Also, the smoke generated when fat and juices drip on the hot coals or rocks can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, another potential cancer causing chemical. As the smoke rises up past the food it can deposit PAHs on the surface of the meat."
"Does Grilling Pose a Cancer Risk?
Some studies suggest there may be a cancer risk related to eating food cooked by high-heat cooking techniques as grilling, frying, and broiling. Based on present research findings, eating moderate amounts of grilled meats like fish, meat, and poultry cooked without charring to a safe temperature does not pose a problem.
To prevent charring, remove visible fat that can cause a flare-up. Precook meat in the microwave immediately before placing it on the grill to release some of the juices that can drop on coals. Cook food in the center of the grill and move coals to the side to prevent fat and juices from dripping on them. Cut charred portions off the meat."
"though it has been known for some time that meats cooked at high temperatures produce cancer-causing compounds, researchers say that this studys increased cancer risks could be due to the higher fat content in the meat women were eating vs how the meat was cooked. There was agreement, however, that the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables could account for why the women who ate more fruits and veggies had lower cancer risk.

"Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil, rock and water.
The problem is when it enters your home, especially when it's sealed up tight like we like it in the winter, then it can be deadly over time. And that's why we're more at risk living here in the Midwest.
Radon enters a home as a gas, getting in through cracks in your foundation or seeping through the concrete of your basement.
When your home is closed up, the pressure inside acts like a vacuum, sucking the gas in from the ground and dispersing it throughout your home.
The age, the size, the construction of your home doesn't matter.

Transferred early one morning from one hospital to another, I was unexpectedly ushered into a season of my life unlike anything I couldve imagined...
As for the physical realities of these last six months specifically, the details are elaborately told on my website. The gist of it all is that I write from a window of wellbeing, a window we hope will open up considerably and stay open for years to come. Round V has proved itself to be more difficult than we were expecting, and while we are still modifying dosages and the like, my doctor has committed to make life and treatment work together. Early in June Im scheduled for a CT scan to confirm the cancers been dealt with, and an MRI and bone-density scan to determine the extent of bone damage due to some of the meds Ive been on. One orthopedic doctor Ive seen suggests a hip replacement is in my future. Ive much to do to rehabilitate my body from the nasty effects of the chemo and the subsequent months in bed. But if things go as we hope, this summer should offer ample opportunity for strides to that end...

MONDAY, July 17 (HealthDay News) -- Nearly half of all cancer deaths are preventable.
That remarkable news comes with an equally stunning corollary -- the key to success doesn't rest with some undiscovered therapies or treatments. Much of cancer's toll can be reduced with simple precautions, such as lifestyle changes and routine screenings.
But somehow that message isn't getting through to enough people.
"We can't beg people to change their behavior, to make the lifestyle changes that we know will reduce cancer risk," said Carolyn "Bo" Aldige, president of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation, in Alexandria, Va.
The biggest threat, of course, is smoking. "You'd have to live on another planet not to know smoking causes cancer," Aldige said.
Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in U.S. society. Tobacco causes nearly one in five deaths in the United States, killing about 438,000 Americans each year, according to the American Cancer Society.
Yet, about 45 million adults still smoke -- about 23 percent of men and 19 percent of women.
Need more proof that much of cancer's misery is self-inflicted?
Experts estimate that about one in three of the 564,830 deaths from all forms of cancer this year will be related to poor nutrition, inactivity, overweight and obesity.
Research has shown that "excess calories cause the mutations that start genes going down the pathways that cause cells to divide out of control, and that's what cancer is," Aldige said. "If everybody today magically had the appropriate body mass index, we'd start seeing a lot less colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer," she said.
But there's a highly effective second line of defense against each of these cancers and many others -- screenings. Doctors can test for these cancers, as well as testicular, cervical and other kinds of malignancies, and often catch them before they've gone too far. And taking the tests usually requires little time and causes only minimal discomfort.
Eventually, there will even be screenings for lung cancer, probably in the form of "spiral CT" scanning, using special equipment to obtain multiple cross-sectional images of the organs and tissues of the chest, Aldige said.
Then there's melanoma, the deadly skin cancer that's on the rise. An estimated 62,190 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed in the United States this year, and 7,910 people will die of it, according to the American Cancer Society.
But melanoma is highly curable if it's caught in its early stages. The best way to do that: Check your own skin about once a month and become familiar with the pattern of moles, freckles, and other marks so you'll spot any changes. And a skin exam should be part of a routine cancer checkup by a doctor or qualified health professional.
Many people know that too much sun causes skin cancer, and they use sun block to protect themselves. But not many know that you need some sun every day -- about 15 to 20 minutes' worth, especially younger people, for vitamin D. The trick is to go out before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. during warm weather months, Aldige said.
Vitamins play an important role in cancer prevention as well, she said, and eating properly and taking recommended supplements can help.
Yet, the overall problem isn't just one of people refusing to do what's good for them, said Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, program director of cancer occurrence at the American Cancer Society.
"It is access to care," he said. "Recently, the federal government has made access to breast and cervical cancer screenings available to women. But a large percentage of the population is uninsured, and it is a question of access and care," he said.
"We cannot completely prevent cancer," Jemal added, "but we can substantially improve by doing the right thing."

"What You Body Needs
On the average, our bodies need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. This enables them to resist disease, maintain strength and endurance, increase vitality, improve our mood, and slow down the aging process.
You can live about five to seven days without water, about five to seven weeks without food, but only about five minutes without oxygen. Therefore, oxygenate your body throughout the day by taking one-minute deep breathing breaks. In this exercise you breathe in deeply through your nose, then blow the air out through your mouth.
Many Americans are in the process of developing cancer due to stressful lifestyles, lack of exercise, and an excessive intake of sugar, processed foods, hydrogenated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Therefore, in my opinion, healthy dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle habits will help fight against a majority of cancers"-from Dr. Colbert

"In 1996, Mary Ann was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer. Soon, she began calling the Counseling Center to ask for prayers. Even though a Christian, Mary Ann was angry and questioned God and stopped going to church. A separated single mother, Mary Ann thought her illness was a curse for all her sins in the past. But in spite of how angry she felt towards God, Mary Ann continued to call the Center for prayer and encouragement.
Over the years, the cancer transferred from her left breast to the right, and she eventually had to undergo mastectomy. Wanting to survive, Mary Ann underwent all possible treatments for cancer - chemotherapy, radiation, lumpectomy, immuno therapy, and various surgeries, along with different kinds of medications.
In July 2003, doctors found lumps in her lungs the size of 25-centavo coins. Within 30 days, the growth multiplied from 3 to 15 lumps, and doctors diagnosed her case as stage 4 lung cancer. This time, instead of feeling more angry, Mary Ann saw it as a wake-up call from God. She knew God was calling her and her children back to Him. Mary Ann and her two kids recommitted their lives to Christ and began attending church once again. It was then that her relationship with her kids and family began to flourish.
Still, Mary Ann's battle with cancer continued, and she developed complications - type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart enlargement and arthritis. By this time, her family hardly had any money left to sustain her treatment and medication.
Then, last August 9, during a routine chest x-ray, doctors were surprised to find her lungs clear of any growth. Perplexed, doctors suggested that Mary Ann undergo the test again, and for the second time it showed that the lumps in her lungs had disappeared. Somewhat still unconvinced, Mary Ann was asked to have her chest x-rayed for the third time, and by God's miracle it was indeed clear. She underwent a couple of other tests, and doctors diagnosed her totally healed of cancer.
Mary Ann gives all the glory to God for her miraculous healing. She is also deeply thankful to counselors of The 700 Club Counseling Center for tirelessly praying for her through her nine years of battle with cancer. And in time, God answered their prayers. Today, Mary Ann is a committed member of their church choir, while her kids are with the dance and music ministry."
