Spry Plays First Gig

Spry Plays First Gig

By Ned Neiderlander

Friday, December 13th 2002 marked the very first gig for the off-shoot band of Puafua. The new band is called Spry, headed by Puafua's former members: Jeff Siegfried (sax), Aaron Stoehr (trombone), Steve Olmstead (keyboards), and Eric Bequeaith (trumpet). In addition, the band has added Pete Miller (bass), James Pope (sax), and Greg Reierson (drums).

The Red Sea venue marked an interesting revisit to Puafua's old stomping grounds. Puafua reportedly played over 30 shows at the bar from 1998-2000.

Although slightly rough around the edges, Spry's song line-up showcased thrilling high points reminiscent of Puafua tunes, and strong vocals from members who played a more subtle vocal role in the old group. Except for Aaron's "Hot Poop" which was played by Puafua in 2000, 2001, all the tunes made their debut that night, and were as intricately written and groovy as many of the tunes Puafua fans have grown to love.

Joining Puafua was Stand By the Door, featuring Pete McCauley's birthday celebration. Guests also included Chris Weinberger and Mike Mehsikomer of Eddie Mac, recently back from a tour to L.A.
