During the next week, my life was pretty normal. I didn't think about the test because I didn't know what they might show. Since I didn't know, I didn't fear them.
On Friday, the pone rang, announcing that my test results were ready. Steph answered the phone and mouthed to me that it was the hospital and motioned to me to pick up the cordless extension on the kitchen table.
"Is this Stephanie Watson, please?" asked a female voice.
"Yes, this is. May I ask who is calling?"
"This is Dr. Sauin with Char's test results. We would like to discuss this matter in person at the hospital, instead of on the phone. We noticed something unusual on the test."
"Oh... okay, we will be there in a half an hour." said Steph in a worried, shaky voice. "Thank You."
I hung up the phone and went to get my coat as Steph scribbled a hurried note to Charlie explaining where we went. I began to worry, because Steph never got like this.
We rode in scilence, each of us emered in our thoughts. We both expected the worst, even though we didn't know what that could be.
As we pulled into the hospital parking garage and took the ticket from the machine to validate our parking, the machine played its recording.
"Have a nice day" said a fakey recording.
