Tracing Lines of Descent (or, what are first cousins, once removed?)

Tracing Lines of Descent

This explanation is courtesy of a kind poster on Yahoo! Genealogy Research Club:

Here is how you find your level of "cousin": First find your common ancestor beyond your parents. The level of cousin is determined by subtracting 1 from the number of generations of the earliest generation from the common ancestor.

Example: from your grandparents, you are 2 generations down. So for everyone in the same generation as you, outside your immediate family, you are 2 - 1 = first cousins. From your g-grandparents, you are 3 generations down. So for everyone in the same generation as you, you are 3 - 1 = second cousins.

For some one who is NOT in the same generation as you, you designate them (or you) as being "removed" by the difference of generations. Your parent's first cousins, those on the same generation as they from their grandparents, would be your first cousin once removed, and you theirs. They are on the first cousin level, 2 - 1 = first cousin, and there is one generation difference between you and them, 3 - 2 = 1.

My dad's first cousin is my first cousin once removed, her daughter is my second cousin, her daughter's daughter is my second cousin once removed, and her daughter's daughter is my daughter's third cousin.
