Dedicated to David Drevnick
God Bless His Soul

When a Veteran cries...
they tip their heads
close their eyes
trying to blink it away
but they can't
and they won't
because the tears just keep coming -never ending-
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
they'll think
of the friends
who've passed away
the wreath tossed
twenty-one gun salute
only tokens of the real picture -of tragedy-
When a Veteran cries

When a Veteran cries...
at the parade
the Flag passes by
their hands to their hearts
earning the right
knowing the privilege
standing for those who aren't there anymore
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
off they go
into themselves
quietly giving into memories
please not today
please not right now
but nothing will ever take it away...
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
it breaks my heart
pains me greatly
there's nothing I can do
they're all heroes
every single one
will they listen when I tell them this?
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
when they cry
so do I
their pain's a powerful thing
a single tear
an imposing thought
because they think they shouldn't be here...
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
so do angels
yes, angels in Heaven
they cry when they see their brave lads
racked with guilt
filled with shame
rigidly cramped with all the emotional burdens...
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
it is rare
the guards are down
and we are privy to it all
the minimal tears
tales of the past
as quickly as it happens, it disappears...
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
there's a purpose
for their tears
to shed for someone not here
KIA/MIA/POW
PTSD, carcinogenics
death is still death in any war -any conflict-
When a Veteran cries.

When a Veteran cries...
and you see it
know the impact
that this has on their entire life
a constant struggle
lingering heartbreak
their buddies are dead, but they lived -how ironic-
When a Veteran cries...

Many thanks to PJ
