  • When did you attend your first field trial?1968
  • Where? New Sharon, Iowa
  • What dog did you earn your first placement with? A setter female named Tappy.
  • What Dog did you win you first Championship with? CH The Pat Finder
  • When?1975
  • Which Championship? The Lakes States Grouse Championship.
  • What was the most impressive Field Trial performance you have ever seen (someone else's dog)? I watched Pleasant Valley Clyde win a Championship in Michigan (probably the Lakes States) with three grouse finds. Nobody else was finding birds. Back in those days, the Michigan courses were mostly pole timber and the birds would be in the open or on the swamp edges. Clyde and Jetrain also put on quite a show in, I think the first, invitational. They kept swapping finds and had like 3 each. I watched two performances that were not rewarded, Kingway put on a show in MI and Star's Misty Ghost did a great job out in MI. She had some sort of a mishap on the 4th bird, but was tremendous upto that time. None of the gallery could see what happened on that last piece of work. Heartbreaker won the National Amateur Grouse Championship in a driving rainstorm. She had two grouse finds and one of the birds must have been at least 30 yards out in front of her. Scott Chaffee handled her for Mr. Homuth.
  • What was the most impressive Field Trial performance you have ever seen (you handled)? When Northern Dancer won the Lakes States, he really ran a tremendous race and had a find close to the end. It was kind of a quiet dark night and the whole gallery could hear the bell stop and the grouse fly. When I walked out of the woods, the judges and everyone in the gallery shook my hand and knew they had seen a winner. Heartbreaker won the Fruchey with about five finds and her usual exciting race. Also Spring Garden Keeper's win of the Grand National is a great memory. She had been running well and had a good grouse find, when her bell stopped with about two minutes to go, she was bugeyed and had a woodcock pinned out in the open. The bird walked all the way around her, before it flew. Needless to say my blood pressure went skyhigh.
  • What person or persons were most influencial in your field trial career? The Fruchey family definitely had the most influence on my career. I met Grandpa George and enjoyed his stories. Art was a master and was always willing to share his knowledge. Wayne and Marlene were great hosts and we shared lots of laughs. I bugged those poor folks for any info I could gather. They have helped many grouse trialers through the years. I also spent valuable time with Dr. Alvin Nitchman and learned from him.
  • How many Championships have you won?14 Championships and 2 Invitationals.
  • How many different champions have you owned or handled? 10
