Definitions of Key Christian Terms

In order to really understand the Bible and be able apply it to our lives, we must know what key words mean. So here are some basic Christian terms and their definitions. They are in alphabetical order.

Assurance of Salvation

God’s Spirit witnesses to our spirit, that we are the children of God

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

I John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

It is manefested by our love for the bretheren (fellow believers)

I John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

Carnal Christian

Carnal in the Bible means to be ruled by your flesh (soul). This is an oxymoron. There is no support in scripture for this term, and there actually is no such thing, you either are carnal or a Christian, but you can’t be both.

Romans 8:6-9 and 13-14 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7: Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8: So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9: But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
13: For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Condemnation

John 3:19: And this is the condemnation, that light (Jesus) is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Romans 8:1 : There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Conditions

Salvation is conditional, in that we must forgive others, show mercy, we must not deny Jesus before men, etc.

Matthew 6:14-15 14: For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Matthew 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Eternal Life

It is a life beyond this one, to be found in Jesus. It is a state of being that only God possesses. You cannot have eternal life without Jesus, because He is eternal life. He will give you eternal life if you believe in Him.

John 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

I John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11: And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12: He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

Faith

Faith in the Bible means believing and putting your trust in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of your soul.

Galations 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24: Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26: To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Fruit

Fruit in the Bible means the deeds (things) that men do, whether they be good or evil

Matthew 7:15: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16: Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17: Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18: A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19: Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Galations 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23: Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Gift

God has a gift for you, what is it. Is it salvation, or eternal life, or the Holy Spirit, or grace, or mercy, or faith. The gift is Jesus Christ himself. He is the gift, if you receive Him all the other things I mentioned above will be yours also, but not apart from Him.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14: Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15: But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16: And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17: For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18: Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19: For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20: Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Good Works

Works are not essential to salvation, in other words, you can’t work your way into heaven. However if you are in Christ you will do good works, even as Jesus did. And you will be judged by your works. In order for them to be truly good works, they need to be initiated by the Holy Spirit, in His timing and with His strength. You don’t get the credit for them, but you are rewarded for them in Heaven. These good works are not the same as dead works.

Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14: Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15: These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Matthew 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13: And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15: And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Gospel of the Kingdom

The gospel of the Kingdom has 3 essential parts.
First: It is the good news that we have a new King. We don’t have to serve the our old masters the world, our flesh and the devil. We have a new King and master who is Jesus the Christ of Nazareth.
Second: Jesus died for our sins.
Third: Jesus rose from the dead.

Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2: (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3: Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4: And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

I Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2: By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3: For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4: And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

Grace

Grace is not unmerited favor, that is mercy. Grace is God doing in and through you, what you are unable to do in yourself. Grace is the power of God coming into your life, and completely changing it.

Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

2Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is theF Spirit of God, also known as the Comforter.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the ather, he shall testify of me

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Lordship/Kingship

It is essential to our salvation, that Jesus Christ be our ONLY Lord and King. Some people don’t think this is important, but it is vital.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Mattew 2:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42: Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43: He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44: The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45: If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46: And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Love

Your determined effort for someone else’s good
It is more than fuzzy feelings for someone. Biblical love is that you would sacrifice your life to save another. This does not necessarily mean that you have to die for them. I think sometimes its harder to live for the good of someone else. This goes contrary to what the “world” is preaching right now.

John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Matthew 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38: This is the first and great commandment. 39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

New Creature

You become a new creature when Christ is formed within you.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

19: My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.

Overcomers

We are to be overcomers, we are to be victorious and not defeated.

Romans 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

I John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5: Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Perfection

Perfection is something we could never attain on our own, but when Jesus Christ is formed in us we are perfect, even as He is.

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

I Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

Repentance

Repentance is more than just being sorry for your sins, you have to confess and forsake (stop doing) them. It is a 180 degree turning away from them and from living your life your way, and not God’s way. You cannot do this in your own strength, you must put your trust and faith in Jesus, that He will give you His powerful strength (grace) to do it.

Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

2 Corinthians 7:9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10: For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Result

The result of becoming a Christian, should be a completely changed life. You will become part of the bride of Christ, without spot or wrinkle, perfect even as Jesus is perfect. When Jesus by His Spirit purges out of you all that is unseemly, worldy, unrighteous, wicked , and everything seemingly good, but contrary to God’s ways.

1Timothy 6:14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Righteousness

We

Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19: For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Phillipians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9: And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Salvation

To be free from power of sin, the flesh and the devil, in this life, as well as from hell in the life to come.

Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19: I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20: For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21: What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22: But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Sin

Sin is anything that we do with full knowledge, that is contrary to God’s ways.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The Elect

Those people chosen by God, to be saved. But you still have a choice. Its like you have choose to go out for football, but then you have to qualify for the team. (You can’t be chosen for the team if you refuse to go to the football field)

Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

2Peter 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Walking in the Spirit

We are comanded to walk constantly in the Spirit of God.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10: And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11: But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12: Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13: For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
