I give unto my Son William my two Negroes Dick and Mingo unto him the Heirs of body Lawfully begotten, and a feather
bed and furniture my pistons and houlsters and two Guns and all my working tools and a horse Colt: the said horse

witness Estate Inventory of John Berryman of Surry. 19 Nov 1712 Will of John Bailey (son of Ansolme) W. 19 Nov 1712,
R. 28 May 1713 10 Mar 1720 William West, William Kinchin and Thomas Williams appraise two negroes of John Baly, deceased.
John Bailey born 1670 had his Will probated in 1713. Why would appraisal be 7 years later? Is this a different John Bailey?
Is this actually a delayed recording? The John Bailey born 1670 in his Will gave two Negroes to his son and two to his
wife. 13 May 1720 William Bayly sells to Robert Newsum 150 acres originally granted to John Bailey, deceased, 25 Mar 1715
on east side of Toquothuta Swamp. John Bailey born 1670 had son William who inherited estate. William did not inherit
until 19 which was probably after 1714. This land may have not come to father's estate until a ?mortgage was paid.
The Will of Sarah Wiggins Surry Co. makes gift to eldest son John Bayley 16 May 1711. Witnessed by Richard Hide and
John Phillips. Thomas Wiggins Will 31 Jan 1710/11 her husband makes no mention of John Bayley. He only identifies a son
John WIGGINS. I assume Sarah would have to either have married a Bailey before 1695 as 1711 she has a daughter
apparently with John Wiggins married to a Cooper. Most likely John Bayley is John Bayley Wiggin.

Surry, Anselm Bailey to Robert Foster.
A letter with one enclosure, both under cover addressed to John Hunt, merchant, London, per Capt. Yoyille.
This is a letter from one Quaker to another, acknowledging the receipt and account of 49 hogsheads of tobacco. The
writer is glad to hear that John Hunt is on his way to America. The news of the great price of tobacco has induced him
to order goods to the value of £220 to £230, and he encloses a list of what is to be sent as soon in the summer as
possible. He states that after efforts to ship tobacco to London, he was able only to get one hogshead aboard the
"APPOMATTOX" consigned to John Hunt, and he desires his account should be credited with the proceeds. The writer goes
on to say that they are getting to the stage of manufacturing "Indico" in Virginia, and he would like to know what price
good "Indico" fetches. The writer promises to deliver a letter to William Taylor, or Miles Cary, executors of Col Taylor,
whose sons have discontinued merchandise. Endorsed to Robert Foster, Assignee of John Hunt, Merchant, London.
Enclosure:
List of merchandise to be sent to Virginia. This contains of 70 to 80 items varying from such things as "2 dozen small
dram glasses and 1 dozen wine ditto" to "4 dozen boys felt hats", "1 ream of good paper", and "10 lbs of black pepper."

I Jesse Hargrave of Sussex County in Virginia being fully persuaded that Freedom is the natural Right of all mankind
and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done by the like situation and having under my care
three Negroes whom I have heretofore held as Slaves of the following names and ages viz't. Simon aged about Twenty
five years,Tom aged about Twenty four,Rose aged about Twenty four years I hereby emancipate and set free all and every
of the above naimed Slaves and I do for my self my Heirs Executors and Administrators relinquish all my right title
and claim or pretentions of claim whatsoever either to their persons or to any Estate they may hereafter acquire And
having also three Negroes now in their minority of the following names and ages viz't. Stuart aged about six years,

1769. James and Arthur Jr would have been her brothers. John Thomas Blow filed "Publick Claim" in 1782 for beef and a
saddle. The 1779 Census Index has a John Thomas Blow in Southampton Co., VA.

Assuming he was at least 16 when he married. Will probated 13 Nov 1783. 12 May 1759, William Howell and Barnaby Bailey
bought 140 acres in Southampton Co., VA. In Cavaliers and Pioneers Barnaby Bailey owns land adjacent to 71 acres bought
by Joseph Lane in Sussex. Date is 15 Jun 1773. Lane's Land is described as northeast of the Nottoway Indians Circle
Tract, south of the Tuscarudoe/Turcarora Branch, and north of the Lightwood Swamp. For Barnaby's land it says see
PB 27, p. 47 to Joseph Hart. In Barnaby's Will identifies granddaughter Lucy Bailey. This would have to be daughter of
his son James or his son Richard. Barnaby filed "Publick Claim" in 1782 for beef. In Virginia Tax Payers Barnaby is
listed in Southampton. Southampton Co., VA. was formed in 1749 from Isle of Wight. Barnaby, John Warren, John Brett,
James Ridley, Penry Person, and William Taylor petitioned House of Burgess 14 Nov 1753 for tobacco that was burned in
a Public Warehouse at Smithfield. On 27 Nov 1753, the House allowed them credit, I guess, for the tobacco that was
destroyed. Barnaby Bailey Jr. and Barnaby Bailey Sr. appraised with John Phillips the estate of Michael Cobb. R. 12 Jan
1764. Barnaby must have had son as his father was William so Jr is his son. Not in his will so Jr must have died before
1783, unless he left area.

Lane Jr. in Surry Co. Filed a "Publick Claim" in 1782, for beef, corn, and fodder. There is a Thomas Lane whose Surry
Will was written 5 Mar 1770, and recorded 19 Mar 1771. His wife was Mary. Is this a different Thomas Lane? He had
a daughter Sally. Thomas, John, and William Bailey witnessed Will. This appears a different Thomas Lane. Originally
thought Lucy married a Thomas Lane but cannot associate that name with Thomas Lane. A Lane researcher, Jim Lane, isn't
aware of Thomas Lane married to a Lucy but does know of a Joseph. Marriage before 1741. Lucy's last name unknown. I
have not been able to find last name either. Lucy would have to have been born before 1725, her sister Ann born about
1720, to marry this Joseph which is possible. That Joseph and Lucy had 9 children, one of which was Lucy.

I assume he was 17 in 1756, when appraising. Appraised several estates in 1774, and there was a John in 1782, on the tax
payer list. A John Bailey file "Publick Claim in 1782, for beef. A daughter of a John Bailey was suretied by Hartwell
Bailey. In Virgina Tax Payers lists only one John Bailey in 1782, in Southampton. In the Will of William Bailey, he
identifies a grandson Peter Bailey. Since this is not Barnaby's son he must be John's son. John received the plantation
he lives and 200 acres. William Bailey and John Bailey appraised William Cobb estate R. 14 Jul 1757 in Southampton.
John was legatee of William Howell. Received land adjacent to Barnaby Bailey. D. 7 Oct 1760, R. 13 Oct 1763. Witnesses
Charles Calthorpe, Michael Cobb, John Phillips. 1759 May 12, William Howell and Barnaby Bailey were grantees of 140
acres.[This is probably the same land and apparently Howell gave his share to John, Barnaby's brother for some reason.]
John apparently left no Will. The 1787, Southampton Personal Property Tax: no whites males under 16, 5 blacks above 16,
9 blacks under 16, 4 horses/mules and 23 cattle. Paid tax for son Peter.

I, ELIJAH BAILEY of Sussex County do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows to wit;
First I give to my son WILLIAM BAILEY the land and plantation where on I now live containing by estimation 140 acres be the same more or less to him and his heirs forever
Second I give to my grandson BARACK BAILEY the plantation whereon my son WILLIAM BAILEY now lives with that part of the land lying on the east ford of the branch whereon I now dwell containing by estimation 50 acres be the same more or less to him and his heirs forever.
Third I give to my grandson SAMUEL PEEBLES the remaining part of the last above mentioned tract of land lying on the west side of the above (?) containing by estimation 50 acres be the same more or less to him and his heir forever.
Fourth I give to my two grandsons ELAM PATTERSON and ELIJAH PATTERSON the tract of land which I purchase of SAMUEL NICKALSON containing by estimation 127 acres be the same more or less to be equally divided between them when they arrive at the age of twenty one years, but if neither of them live to be the age of twenty one years of age, it is my will and desire that the said tract of land be sold and the money arising there from be equally dividing among the surviving of my children.
It is also my will and desire that the above named tract of land above be rented out until both of my above mention grandson arrive at the age of twenty one years of age and the money arising from the rent thereof I give to my son-in-law BENJAMIN PATTERSON.
Fifth I give to my son WILLIAM BAILEY my smith anvil and brick iron.
Sixth I give to my daughter FAITH PATTERSON fifty-five pounds cash.
Seventh I give to ANN BAILEY daughter of TRIAL BAILEY five pounds cash.
Eighth I leave the rest of my estate to be equally divided among my children, namely WILLIAM BAILEY, SARAH PEEBLES and FAITH PATTERSON.
I coordinate and appoint my son WILLIAM BAILEY and JAMES PEEBLES executors to this the last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have here onto set my head and affixed my seal this eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine

)I Absalom Bailey of Sussex County being of sound memory and perfect senses do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following viz't. to wit.
1st. I give to my wife Hollen Bailey one bed and furniture that she lies on to dispose of as she thinks proper together with a maintenance out of my Estate during her life.

I, Michael Bailey of Sussex County do make this my last Will and Testament as followeth,
I give to my Son Robert such balance as shall be due from him to me and to M. Bailey & Co. at the time of my death.
I give to my Son James Cryer the land and plantation whereon I live with this exception that my fishing places shall be rented out for the benefit of my Daughters as long as any of them shall remain single.
I also give my said Son James C. the following negroes Tom that I bought of B. Loftin and his wife, Judah and child Franky and their increase from this day to him and his heirs forever also two beds and furniture four cows and calves ten sheep three sows and pigs one dozen best walnut chairs my new desk and book case.
I give unto my Daughter Ann my negro woman Patt and her child Charlotte with their increase from this day also two beds and furniture to her & her heirs forever.
I give unto my Daughter Polly my negro woman Celia & her child Hannah with their increase from this day also two beds and furniture to her and heirs for ever.
I give unto my Daughter Elizabeth my negroes Tom (I purchased of Whitehead) my boy Billey to her and her heirs forever also two good beds and furniture.
I give my water grist mill and its appurtenances to my son James C. Bailey and his heirs forever. And whereas I have let my son James have one thousand pounds to put in trade with the firm of Michael W. Bancock and Company of Petersburg upon the following terms that he is not to pay any interest for the money during the term of the partnership in consideration of his not paying interest I am to have one half of the profits or gain that he shall draw out of or from that partnership aforesaid, the principal aforesaid is to be paid me or into my estate.
It is my will and desire that the remainder of my estate including the above said one thousand pounds shall be equally divided between my four following children James C., Ann, Polly & Elizabeth or their legal representatives and having in my possession two negro men Charles & Isham it is my will and desire that Charles shall enjoy his freedom and that he have ten pounds cash given him p year as long as he is keep in bondage by me that is from the date of this will till it takes effect and gives him his freedom it is my will that Isham shall be obliged to keep the mill and do Coopers work as long as my son James keeps the mill in his possession and repair but shall pay him ten dollars a year for ten years for his services and then shall maintain him if unable to labour or my son may emancipate him after my death if he thinks proper. And having in my possession several negroes that I have heretofore emancipated in their non age it is my will and desire that they remain and work on the plantation for the joint benefit of my last mentioned four children untill they shall respectively arrive of age. It is my will and desire that my share of the profits arising from the trade of M.W. Hancock & Co. as aforesaid which is one half of what may be gained by my Son James in that concern may be equally divided between my three Daughters and my Grandson Micajah (Son of Robert). Lastly I appoint my son James C. Bailey & my friend Benjamin Wyche Exors.of this my last Will. Witness my hand this tenth day of May 1798.Michl. Cornwell...2 tables, 1 desk, 20 sitting chairs, corner cupboard, large looking glass, and 1 feather bed and furniture (his first choice)..and whereas in his medical practice my said son has blended his accounts with mine, he is to select for his benefit such as are distinguished by "ABJunr" or any other mark for services performed by himself.
To son Jeremiah all land on west side of road from Proctor's Bridge to Atkins' Bride on the Mill Swamp in Isle of Wight, 220 acres, and 50 pounds, and 2/3 of the brick now remaining on the land on the southeast side of said road, 1 bed and furniture (his second choice), and one-half the setting chairs after the legacy to Anselm.
To son Samuel the remainder of my land in Isle of Wight, 230 acres on southwest side of said road, 1 bed and furniture (his third choice), the paint and oil I have provided for the painting of his house, and the other half of the sitting chairs. after debts and legacies are paid, the residue of the estate is to be divided equally among my three sons.

I give and devise unto my wife ELISABETH the Lands and Plantation whereon I now dwell on the north side of the north? Coppahauk & Cabin branches (near Dandron, VA hwy 31=Donna Beers) containing five hundred acres to hold to the said ELIZABETH for the term of her natural life but upon this condition that she suffer and permit my son BENJAMIN to improve settle and build on such part of the said lands as he may choose to reside on when he arrives to the age of twenty one years.
I lend to my said wife for the term of her natural life the use & labor of the following slaves to wit; Cesar. Dinah & Pegg, also the use of my small coal still & my hand mill. I also lend to my said wife the use and laborer of a slave called Dick until my son BENJAMIN attains the age of twenty-one years. I give onto my said wife the following articles to wit; my traveling chair & harness her choice of two horses, except the startner? (1) Arthur # 1 was the son of Thomas T. Hollyman and his wife,Ann ___. Thomas T. was born about 1690 to WILLIAM HOLLYMAN and his wife,MARY CHAMBERS. I don't have a birthdate or death date on this ARTHUR,but he only had two children - I believe. (a) Exum, who is believed tohave married(1) Peggy Freeman, (2) Nancy Williamson. Arthur's second child was namedElizabeth, and this Elizabeth married Arthur Doles, and she may havepassed away before Arthur, her father. They were believed to beresidents of Southampton Co., VA(2) Arthur # 2 was the son of JOSEPH HOLLEMAN, Sr., and thisArthur was born about 1710,and died bfr 25 Aug 1778. Arthur's wife was named Margaret. They had 9children, and Arthur # 3 was born about 1730, and he died 10 Jan 1816,probably Southampton Co., VA. This Arthur was married to CatherineBritt, 30 May 1785, in Southampton Co., VA.(3) Arthur # 3 and Catherine Britt had a son that they namedArthur. I have no birth or death dates on this one, but on 2 Jan 1844,he married Henrietta Holleman in Southampton Co., VA. Another child ofthis couple was named Elizabeth (Nancy) and I have that she marriedWilliam Bailey on 25 May 1814 in Southampton Co., VA.
