After, Madder Rose left the stage, the lights go up and the last 3 songs from NIN's TDS begin. During this time, the stage is being prepared for Hole. Lots of naked dolls are displayed on the instruments, amps, etc. By the time, we get to "Hurt", the lights go down. The crowd, which had been swaying back and forth the entire time, is primed to explode. I had a pretty good view of the soundboard and I saw the engineer put in another CD, so I knew the show wasn't about to begin, yet. NIN is off and now we're listening to some archaic sounding folkish male singer with an acoustic guitar. I have no idea who he is. He finishes one long song and begins another. During his second song, Hole comes out. Courtney is all ready in prime Keef Richards mode. Puffing away on what would be the first of many cigarettes. Everyone straps on the gear. Courtney quickly introduces the new bassist and the rip into "plump". I think "miss world" was like the 3rd or 4th song. I can't run out of compliments to Patty Schemel (the drummer). She kicked. In fact, the whole group was very tight. They clearly rehearsed, a few times. Hole managed to capture the many dynamics of their album in a live setting. Courtney voices was in fine shape. A little raspy, but that's how we like it. Boy, she has lungs! Whoever their new bass player is did a wonderful job of handling the low end and vocal harmonies. One of my earlier highlights was "asking for it". Hole would seemingly end the song and then bring it back. Way cool! She mentioned Kurdt once and it wasn't like a memorial service, at all. Basically, she was introducing the song "softer softest" by telling a story that she claims to have never uttered before. Something about the origins of the "pee girl". Some girl in Kurt's grade school who actually smelled of urine.
Other highlights, someone from the audience held up a barbie doll. Courtney responded by saying "Barbie is the real enemy". She asked for the barbie doll. Held it up to her microphone and said (in a cartoonish voice) "I look like a penis". The audience member, BTW, did not get the barbie back. The mosh pit was a thriving mass of hot sweaty bodies crowd surfing. It never seemed to reach a dangerous level. Everyone was looking out for each other. The females seemed to mosh without being "man"handled. After Hole finished the set, they exited the stage. I believe Courtney threw some remaining doll props to the audience, before leaving. NIN came on again, this time it was "mr self destruct", before it was over Hole was back on again. Courtney managed to give the audience a very quick peek at her road companion, Frances. After whisking the little kid, away. They begin to play another song. Personally, I think everyone was waiting for the song that they played, "rock star". I've seen this venue do ape-shit before, but they really went, this time. The very last song of the evening was just Courtney and her new bass player (I wish I could remember her name). They played a short gentle lullabye type of a song. After the last chords were strummed and while they were still ringing, Courtney took a pretty nice stage dive into the pit. Needless to say, there was a crowd reaction. It took quite a few stage hands to pull her out. I'm sure it felt like an eternity of being fed to the lions. Let's just say, I'm sure Courtney was glad that she remembered to wear her underwear and for those who attended, last night, we now know that she wears matching black underwear w/ garter belt and stockings. They finally got her back to the stage. Courtney sat down on the stage. I'm not sure she noticed at first, but her right breast was fully exposed to the ever approving crowd. When she did realize this, she didn't seem to care (she's obviously way too cool for words). She just sat there with a shit eating grin, finally covering herself up and stood to leave. She tried to fix what was left of her stockings, but realized it was useless. She waved goodbye and the houselights went up.
All in all, an incredible night of rock and roll for $8. 1994 is clearly gonna be her year. It didn't start out so hot, but she's taking her it in her own hands and she's determined to make something of it with the remaining months. Check out Hole, before they hit that dreaded superstar status and play bigger venues and charge a little more. Which, I feel she probably deserves.
BTW, the tee-shirts were $20. I wasn't too impressed with the design. They come in light blue and black. There's a heart w/ the word Hole written in the middle. I bought the light blue because, they were out of XLG black and I wear way too much black, anyway....
I'm sure I left a few things out and I'm sure somebody has the complete set list, but this was my general impression of the show.
