Reasons to be Beautiful
[sweet_as_cyanide@hotmail.com] - REASONS TO BE BEAUTIFUL; pretty straight forward "highschool outcast"
song. Give someone a reason to be beautiful and they will. Dont give
them a reason and Fuck off youre not worth it.

"Reasons to Be beautiful"...has some of the best lines. Great puns
with the word "love". All about the exageratted importance and fascism
of beauty...another Kurt reference at the end "rise than fade away..."

6. REASONS TO BE BEAUTIFUL: Im only concerned with the outro here. In this
rare moment, I will believe that this song is about Kurt because she is talking back
to his suicide note in the outro. I never read the note, cos I love Kurt but as a singer
and I didn't want to think of the note everytime some1 mentions him. However, I
know there is a part in there where he says something about it being better to fade
out and die than be too famous, or something. Courtney replies by saying: "It's better
to rise than fade away."

Personally, I think the song should be thought about like this: start at the
beginning. Think about old Courtney. Old, drunken, messed-up Courtney, the one
totally impaired by the death of her husband. Do you remember a quote of hers
when they asked her why she did the Versace ad campaign? She said, "Because if
you were given the choice to be a washed-up junkie in seattle, or wear
designer dresses and be told you were wonderful, what would you choose?" She
chose the dresses because she had to live. And this song is her describing
that under all the dresses and make up, it's still Courtney, she's still
herself, but she feels she has to explain it, especially to Kurt. The last
part, "I was there all the time" is her saying, "It's me, Kurt. It's still me,
this was what I had to do, this was my reason for being beautiful." "And I
weep at your feet, and it rains and rains" - that part makes me cry every time.
I think it's the most personal thing she's ever written, and the saddest, too.
That's all, I hope I got thru what I wanted to say. --Becky
