Parkland BMX riders shine at NBL state

By JEFF MILLS
INDEPENDENCE -- The National Bicycle League (NBL) conducted its Missouri State championships Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Countryside BMX Track and local riders from St. Francois County rode away with five state championships. Being crowned 1999 Missouri state NBL champs from the Parkland BMX Track in Park Hills were David Carter of Bonne Terre (17 & over), Jeremy Streng of Park Hills (14 years old), Ryan Bolin of Park Hills (16 years old), Nate Faenger of Desloge (10 years old) and Niki Rhodes of Park Hills (girls 13 year old). Besides the five who earned state titles, numerous other riders from the Park Hills track posted outstanding performances. Those bringing home top state finishes included: Richard McFarland of Park Hills (second place in 9-year-olds), Cody Eaton of Leadwood (third place in 11-year-olds), Tommy Burgan (fifth in 11-year-olds), Ben Loveless (sixth in 11-year-olds), Eric Ziegler (seventh in 11-year-olds), J.D. Hall (eighth in 11-year-olds), Christopher Pinkley (fifth in 12-year-olds), Derrick Scott (second in 13-year-olds), Jared Kemper (fourth in 13-year-olds), Adam Oder (seventh in 13-year-olds), Josh Lybarger (second in 14-year-olds), Carl Loveless (fourth in 14-year-olds), Dustin Smith (third in 15-year-olds), Jeremy Weir (second in 16-year-olds), Matt Maddeaux (fourth in 17 & over), J.T. Black (fifth in 17 & over), and Ryan Hardy (sixth in 17 & over). Parkland Racing Commission President Gary Whitener made the trip with the riders and their families to Independence and he came away beaming with pride. “I’m so very proud of how all of our kids did this weekend,” Whitener said. “They’ve come a long, long way in a short period of time and now all of their hard work and effort is paying off. It’s just a great feeling watching them perform this way.” Similar sentiments were echoed by Missouri State NBL Commissioner Phil Stephens. “Wow, these kids have really come on,” Stephens said. “It’s hard to believe so many of them lack a whole lot of experience.” Maybe the rider who best exemplified the effort of the entire group was 10-year-old state champion Nathan Faenger. Miraculously, Faenger was able to accomplish the feat of earning the No. 1 state plate with very little experience under his belt. In fact, Faenger was competing in only his sixth-ever competitive race. Pictured here are all the members of the Parkland BMX Track who participated at Independence.(Photo by Jeff Mills)
