Lament

We met there at a convergence
So very long ago.
I stood and stared. You circled 'round.
We watched each other grow.

You looked away. I blossomed out
Into a velvet rose.
You turned and saw a richness there.
I only see the thorns.

I look into the deepest night
And see you stare at me.
I hear an old familiar tune;
We share a melody.

Our hearts, they beat in one accord.
We strive to fan the flame.
I found a kindred in the fire,
That even burns through rain.

A crying heart so like my own,
A jewel of rare beauty,
Tried and tested by fire and rain.
An eloquence of duty.

I glanced at you. You smiled at me.
We felt a pain coming.
The symbol of our love we built,
You placed it on a ring.

You put the ring 'round my finger
And kissed away my breath.
I felt myself fall mystically
Away into this death.

Now, sit I in this dungeon deep
And dream of yesterday,
The gentle hand that bolstered me
That quiet tranquil way,

But lead it so to violence just
And rescue me from here.
I sit only and wait the day
You rescue me, my dear,

And ride away forever, love,
With me fast at your side.
But you must waken first. Now, rise,
The lids no thing to hide.

You sleep a peaceful sleep; oh, dream!
Oh, say you dreamt of me!
A smile creeps across your face
. Arise, my love, be free!

And slowly come forth from the place
That we ourselves have wrought.
The final test that true love stands,
The grave, where dead hopes rot.

Relive, my dear, and hold my hand.
Come take me in you arms.
Your warmth will fight the cold away.
Your light will kill the dark.

You stir, oh, sweet, awaken soon
And let us then depart.
For as you sleep so quietly,
So with you sleeps my heart.

For I cannot live without you;
You fill my emptiness.
Return, my love, and bring your love.
I long for you and this.

I sit on the damp floor and ache
All through. I fight the tears.
The sobs that wrack my body tell,
Oh, how I've missed these years.

The look upon your face, I see,
You dream of someone else.
You want to sleep and stay there now,
While I go through my hell.

Understand, love, you look peaceful.
Awaken on your own.
I'll not break what now holds you thus.
Just please remember home.

I hold you in highest regard.
It is, but just a dream.
I know that you will wake one day
And see my face and beam

When you remember all the love,
The love that we have shared.
And don't forget that while you slept,
It was for you I cared.

I didn't doze, dream of others.
I only watched you sleep,
And prayed for day when you would thrust
Yourself out from the deep.

If there were blankets here, my love,
I'd cover you right well,
And let you still sleep all the more.
Survive the place I fell.

When you wake up, we'll be removed
Of the prison we're in.
I pray, that soon will come the day,
But I'll endure 'til then.

Oh, sleep, my sweet; I'll not disturb
The dreams your mind conceived.
But, only, when you waken, love,
Did you e'en dream of me?

Oh, say you did, if even for
Only one moment past.
And so will then my hope revive
That you and I will last.

And when you're finally awake,
Promise you will not seek
The gentle and the timid face,
Not me, of which you dreamed.

Remain as at before this time
When we were torn apart.
Remember our sweet gift exchange.
We own each other's heart.

And when you wake, I'll kiss you hard
And take your breath away.
Perhaps, we will do better then,
But sleep the night away.
