Sonnet 6

Sleep flees my head as I write on and on
to leave you record of what I have done
all of this time while you were gone. Your songs
play on my stereo, and I have won
the fight to stay awake. I don’t know why
I bother. You can’t call tonight. Just leave
for me a sweet message I can rewind.
I promise it will be worn out. I grieve
the days we cannot speak, the time we waste,
the fact we cannot be. And I cannot
close my eyes until after one. My days
creep slower yet and faster than they ought.
And since it’s after one thirty I’ll slide
to sleep as you should do. I know you’ve tried.
