On Promotions and Ranks

Here is the policy for advancement and the duties of each rank. It has been boiled down from all the policies I've gotten. Currently there are five ranks within the craft, Jr. App, App, Sr. App, Journeyman, Master. Each is listed below with what is entailed to move on to the next rank. Please note that these are only an honest representation of what will be expected. Each person with in the craft is different and will be treated accordingly. Roleplay is the emphasis that we are searching for and will in all cases be the prime consideration for advancement. Time listings are absolute minimum times spent at that rank.

If for some reason you don't wish your character to be promoted from his/her present rank, *please* let the Apprentice Master and the Craftmaster know about it! Smiths are almost never informed before they're promoted, since it's much more fun for it to be a surprise, so if we want to promote you but you don't want to be promoted, the surprise can turn nasty, for both parties.

1. Junior Apprentice

A Jr. Apprentice in the SmithCraft is here to learn the basic skills of smithing. IC'ly, your day will be spent in instruction and in chores.

To advance to the full Apprentice rank, we ask you to complete the following list of items:

  • A single coded object (if it passes +check it passes the test)
  • A minimum of 2 weeks as Jr. App.
  • Man the tent for a cumulative 2 hours. This does not have to be
done at one time, or even at one gather. However, manning the
tent should be done at a gather. Please summarize this experience
in a +mail or email to the apprentice master. There are plenty
opportunities for this, as we generally attend all gathers.
  • ROLE PLAY!

When you've made your object, take it to the Apprentice Master. Currently I'm hoping to get an apprentice display set up, for the apps to place their approved projects.

PLEASE do not leave your projects in the lounge!

2. Apprentice

An Apprentice in the SmithCraft is here to KEEP learning the basic skills of smithing and perfecting the ones they have. IC'ly, your day will be spent in instruction and in chores.

To advance to the full Apprentice rank, we ask you to complete the following list of items:

  • A minimum of 4 weeks as an Apprentice,
  • A SubCraft and a Mentor in said subcraft (OPTIONAL)
  • ROLE PLAY!
  • Another 2 hours in the tent OR a commisioned project. (yes, you haveto be asked to make something. Include a copy of the object in a +mail to the apprentice master (app mast), have the recipient +mail the app mast, or make the app mast a copy of the object)
  • @create a unique object, complete with codes and descs that is apprentice level work.

Mentors and Subcrafts
The easiest way to join a subcraft is to find an active master (or even journeyman) in the field you are interested in, request to study under them and have your request granted. This is not the only route however. Sometimes there is no active Master in your desired field, or the Master does not play at the same time as you, or already has 12 apprentices. What then? Contact the CraftMaster, CraftSecond and/or Apprentice Master, they have several methods of solving these problems.

3. Senior Apprentice

Once an apprentice learns the basics of being a Smith (and it can take turns), they will graduate to Senior Apprentice. Sr. Apprentice is meant to ease the transition of life in the hall to life out of the hall, and to increase the skills necessary for advancement. A Sr. Apprentice has a little more flexibility. They will still have chores, but less time will be spent doing them, and more time will be devoted to the study of the craft. More advanced level skills will be learned. They will also venture out into Pern.

To advance to Journeyman is a little more difficult than moving up through the Apprentice ranks. The Sr. Apprentice must show a competence at dealing with code problems (that is to say they better know some people to contact if they don't code well themselves). A very very strong sense of roleplay, and a little luck. Remeber, sometimes Sr. Apps are posted to, usually under a Jman or a Master.

These are somethings you CAN do as a Sr. Apprentice to gain notice for a possibly promotion:

  • @create another, more complex object. (show a competence at dealing with code problems)
  • Man the Smithcraft tent for another 2 hours and/or summarize a smithcraft-related RP to the app mast (email or +mail).
  • Interact with other halls, holds, or weyrs. Also send a summary of that RP to the app mast (email or +mail).
  • ROLE PLAY!!!!!

There is a sense of mystery that will be played out for this advancement. The key is Roleplay. When the CM, C2, Apprentice Master and/or a Sr. Apprentice's Master decide that it may be time to advance someone to Journeyman then The said group shall, with little or no warning, watch the player until a decision is made. If it is decided to continue the player will be requested to stand before a review board. The board will interview the player and away the mystery of the proccess.

4. Journeyman

When you advance to Journeyman rank, you can be posted. You will also be given a room in the Journeyman dorms. You can let the CM and C2 know where you would like to be posted, however they have the final say. They will contact the IC leader of the place you would like to be posted. At your post, you will have three duties:

  • Be the smith for that hold, hall, or weyr. Make the products they require.
  • Be a liason for the craft. Report to the CM's any important news, commissions, possible Apprentices, etc...
  • ROLE PLAY.
  • Train the Sr. Apprentice that MAY BE posted with you and introduce him or her to life in the hold, hall, or weyr.

You are basically on your own as a Journeyman, though you still answer to your master. You are expected to perform any tasks your master wants. As a Journeyman, you will also perfect your area of expertise in the Smith Craft. This can be done IC'ly, but it's also nice to do research on your own. (And if you do, email or somehow type it up and send it to the keep of the webpage (atsmithcraft@usa.net) so it can be added to the pages.)

If you are NOT posted (or don't wish to be, and you don't have to be) then you will remain at the hall. A post is NOT requirement for promotion. You will be given a room in the Journeyman dorms, of course. As a Journeyman at the hall you should:

  • Teach classes. We would prefer IC class sessions, but even a +mail or email to the apprentices or journeyman you are instructing is welcome. The classes will be in your subcraft and you should inform the app mast that you wish to hold a class, what it's about, and when the class will take place.
  • ROLE PLAY.
  • Be a liason for the craft. Report to the CM's any important news, commissions, possible Apprentices, etc...
  • Study and perfect your craft.
  • Be willing to be a mentor in your subcraft.

To advance onto Master level will require a several month, current consensus shows at least 6 months, minimum of time as Journeyman, with a few exceptions. There is another similar process as that used to advance into the Journeyman level. This one will not be revealed at this time. A good grasp of code is highly recomended. Roleplaying will also be Monitored heavily.
