Symbolism of the Major Arcana

Following is a basic list of the symbolism behind the major arcana of the tarot. This symbolism applies to most tarot decks.

I. THE MAGICIAN
*Symbolizes the "everyman"
*Indicates that a change is required

II. HIGH PRIESTESS
*Represents the passive side of man
*Suggests distraction
*Man must still himself and open to the experiences of the spirit realm

III. THE EMPRESS
*Indicates wisdom, spiritual strength, the evolutionary trends of civilization and the influence of the Sun and the Moon

IV. THE EMPEROR
*Represents man as he might be
*Union of opposites, eternity, love

V. THE HEIROPHANT
*Meant to express certain ideas linked with instruction

VI. THE LOVERS
*Represents decision and choice
*Suggests in order to understand ones inner chaos it is necessary for man to develop some part within his psyche which will act as an objective observer of his condition

VII. THE CHARIOT
*The Charioteer represents the mind, the chariot--body, the horses--the emotions
*Represents man at his highest point of development

VIII. STRENGTH
*Meant to allegorize on one level transmutation, and another level the triumph of intelligence over lower forms
*Attention and effort should be put into the situation towards this end

IX. THE HERMIT
*Searching
*Associated with the past
*The querent must change his attitude toward something, for consciously or not, this attitude is blocking his/her spiritual progress

X. THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE
*A need for an active search for the still point around which the Gods and man eternally evolve
*Indicates a period of instability, change and impermanence

XI. JUSTICE
*Represents a warning, and indicates a need for proper deliberence
*Involved with inner questioning

XII. THE HANGING MAN
*Man's inner state in relation to ordinary life
*Loneliness and inner torment
*Shows little concern with environment around him

XIII. DEATH
*Concerned with a state of transformation, need for control
*Linked with regeneration, room must be made for the new

XIV. TEMPERANCE
*Positive aspect of the destruction/rebirth cycle
*Indicates a voyage successfully completed

XV. THE DEVIL
*Suggests man's spirit is off-balance because it pivots on sex
*A period of stagnation, complete frustration and a sense of an insuperable spiritual barrier

XVI. THE TOWER
*Lightning is sundering two elements which did not harmonize
*Difficulties stem from the querent

XVII. THE STAR
*Symbolizes inspiration, creativity, and the spirit of humanity seen as a creative force
*All elements are harmonized: fire--Sirius (the star); Air--bird; Earth--the ground itself; Water--the pool; Spirit--her head

XVIII. THE MOON
*Portrays the final agony of the soul in hell
*Most frightening card; always regarded as a warning of some kind
*Hints at the subconscious dependence on the conscious mind, and also the need for reconciliation between the two--perhaps the aim of all healing, of all religions, and of all artistic endeavors

XIX. THE SUN
*Meant to allegorize the conditions of spiritual growth
*Symbol of renewal and rebirth

XX. JUDGMENT
*Meant to allegorize the idea of spiritual rebirth
*Truly, a judgment
*Successful outcome

XXI. THE WORLD
*Suggests the triad of spirit in glory over the cross of materiality
*Tetramorphs--Four visible elements; Four fixed signs of the zodiac; Four major Sabbats
*Spiritual change

0. THE FOOL
*Represents one's self
*Querent should consider what s/he has and be prepared to set out in a new direction
