Marina, Herzelia - 20/6/00

I wanted to hit the water as early as possible today (so I won't encounter the crowds I saw yesterday), so I dawn patroled.

Place : Marina, Herzelia

Time : 5:20am - 7:30am

Size : Overhead++ dropping to head high

Crowds : At first we were 5 surfers and at the end there were +-30 surfers.

Water Temp : 26 C.

Conditions : offshore wind held the wave up and gave it good form. The waves were breaking left from the south peak and both right and left on the middle peak. I surfed the middle peak going both left and right.
I caught a nice long left and the end of which I just made it out the back. I made it out the wave just to find behind it a thick lip throwing right at me. I dove under the wave and I felt my leash tear, bummer. I started swiming towards my board when I saw the major bummer - 2 feet of board were missing! The board snapped in two. After that I took some fins and shot some pix (They should be up on my homepage within 2 days).
Fun Factor : 8.5 out of 10 (until my board broke) and then it turned to 0 out of 10.

This thing is called a "hasake". It is a floatation device the lifeguards in Israel use. You stand on it and use a two sided paddle to move around. When the waves start pumping a lifeguard will sometimes paddle out one of these beasts and mow all the surfers down.
