"Guardian Angel"
(an alternate L/A story)

Author's note: My outlook has always been that Prince Lotor is not a whole lot older than Allura in the series, but I got this idea and wanted to see how it would turn out. In this story, Lotor is about 15 years older than Allura as I wanted to explore a different sort of relationship.

The young girl ran out of the castle as fast as her legs could carry her, but she was hindered by the tears that clouded her vision. Out of breath and sobbing, she reached the far end of her garden and slumped to the ground. She didn't care if she cried aloud now, not where she was. No one would hear her she knew. Her thoughts flashed through the events of the week.

"No one has time for me anymore!" she sobbed. "Not mother, not father, no one!" Allura knew she shouldn't be feeling sorry for herself but she couldn't help it. Her parents were always too busy to do anything with her and it got to the young princess after a while. She continued to cry, never supposing she wasn't alone.

The tall man walked through the greenery, dodging the low hanging branches of the trees and bushes. He was angry that his father had given him the mission of scouting the small planet. The prince would have rather had one of his men do it, but he needed the break. Coming to what seemed to be a small clearing, he heard a sound. Tilting his head to hear better, he realized it was crying. Peering through the bushes cautiously, he noted a girl, around 5 years old sitting on the ground who seemed to be the source of the crying. She stood and quickly headed back in the direction of the castle, but as he watched, her step faltered on a spanse of uneven ground in the mirky darkness, and she fell to the ground.

Moving slowly in the bushes he came to a spot where he could get a better look at her. Her sobbing had ceased, but tears still streamed down her face. She studied her ankle and attempted to stand, but fell roughly back to the ground. After attempting to stand several times, she finally sunk to the ground and laid there still, her shoulders shaking with silent tears.

Lotor wondered who this girl was, and why she was so upset. It was obvious to him that she had sprained her ankle and the night was cold. His instincts told him to leave her there and think nothing more of it, but his heart told him differently. He did have a heart regardless of what others thought. With a heavy sigh he quietly slunk out from the bushes and moved soundlessly towards the young girl.

As he kneeled beside her, he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. She turned and looked at him in fear, obviously surprised that anyone would be there. Her bright blue eyes were still full of tears when she looked up at him.

"Who...who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling. He didn't answer.

Allura looked at the large man in front of her. She had never seen anyone so beautiful! His light blue skin and long white hair intrigued her, and when she saw his eyes she gasped in awe. They were the yellow eyes of a cat. As she studied him her sorrow and fear slipped away as a thought slipped into her mind.

Eyeing him carefully she asked, "Are you my guardian angel?" Lotor's eyes widened slightly when he realized she was being sincere. He smiled involuntarily. The prince didn't know what to say. After a minute of thoughtful silence he spoke up.

"I suppose you could say that." he fell down on both knees and looked at her. "May I ask your name?" The princess tilted her head as she studied him and her eyes narrowed.

"Shouldn't you already know my name?" Lotor lifted an elegant white eyebrow. She sighed and answered him anyway and in a very proud voice. "I am Princess Allura of Planet Arus. This is my home and that castle in the distance is my castle, the Castle of Lions." Lotor noted her pride with a small smile and gave a nod of his head.

He turned his attention back to her ankle. "It seems that you've had a little accident." Allura nodded as he took her ankle gently in his large hands. He nodded, as it was sprained just as he had thought. Returning his gaze to hers he frowned and stood.

"You are not going to be able to walk for a time. It is sprained and will take time to heal." Princess Allura frowned as well.

"Will you take me home, please?" Lotor turned back to her with surprise. "To the Castle of Lions?" He sighed heavily and kneeled by her side once more.

"All right. I'm going to pick you up, and when I do you'll need to put your arms around my neck and hold on tight. You will be back at the castle in no time." Allura nodded and wrapped her arms around his neck as he bent down to take her in his arms. As he hefted her up, she laid her head against his shoulder and he couldn't help but smile.

She fell asleep in his arms as he started the long trek back to the castle. Careful not to wake her, the young prince gently laid her down next to the main entrance to the castle. Luckily, there were no sentries placed at the door or there would have been trouble. After he had hidden himself, he found a large rock that he threw at the door and waited to see the response.

Two guards came out and noticing the princess, frowned and looked out into the darkness. One picked her up in his arms and took her inside the great castle as the other fussed about her quietly, as not to wake her. Lotor stood staring at the castle door a few seconds longer before heaving a weary sigh.

"Good night my young friend." he uttered as he slunk off into the darkness towards his ship.

Several years later...

The castle's klaxons blared angrily as the Voltron Force sprinted to the Control Room. Commander Keith reached the room first as usual followed closely by the rest of his crew. Coming to a standstill the young captain turned to Koran in urgency.

"What is it Koran? More of Zarkon's men?" Never taking his eyes from the controls, Koran spoke to him.

"I don't know Keith. It seems to be a lone craft."

"A lone craft?" Lance, second in command asked perplexed.

Koran nodded, "We have visual."

All members of the Voltron Force stared at the screen as an unfamiliar face appeared. Princess Allura had previously been standing a little further back but upon seeing the strange man, she came closer to get a better look at him.

'It can't be' she thought to herself. 'He can't be real. That was so many years ago.' But as she looked at the man, she knew it was him. The same azure skin, long white mane, and those yellow cat-like eyes.

"I am Crown Prince Lotor, Son of King Zarkon, the ruler of Planet Doom..." He said more but that was all the princess paid attention to. The realization that the man she had met so long was the son of her greatest enemy shocked her. Allura quickly leaned over and pushed the button enabling the alien prince to see her. He gasped in surprise as she did so and stopped speaking to study her.

It was obvious to the princess that he remembered her. There was no doubt about it. Allura suddenly felt outraged towards him. She wanted to say many things to him but she knew she couldn't; not while everyone else was listening. The young princess did her best to hide her familiarity with the prince as she spoke to him. Lotor played along, speaking as if he had never met her.

At the end of the day, Allura collapsed onto her bed in exhaustion. Despite the long battle of the day, her exhaustion was not really physical, but rather mental. Her mind strayed to the prince once again as it had all day in the midst of battle. A pang of remorse touched her heart as she remembered the first time they had met. She had thought of him as her angel, her savior. But now...she thought of him as a demon. Not only had she been trusting of him before, but she had longed to see him again. Now she blamed the odd feelings on her childish manners from the time he had helped her. That was what bothered her.

No matter what he had done, or was to do, she knew there would always be a doubt in her heart and mind of his evil.

"If he was truly evil," She thought aloud. "He would never have stopped to help a child, especially when he knew she was the daughter of his most hated enemy. If he was evil, he would have taken the opportunity then and there to kill me."

Laying back on her bed, she smiled at a thought that came to mind.

"I think we shall see soon enough if he is truly evil through and through." The young princess slowly fell into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of a plan to bring the prince to her side - to fill the position of 'Guardian Angel' once again.
