HOLY DAYS


The major Christian Holy Days are as follows:

  1. Christmas - Celebrated on December 25 as the birthday of Christ, its inception began in the 4th century to combat the festivals of the pagans during the Winter Solstice.
  2. Easter - occurs during March and April and is for remembrance of Christ’s resurrection.
  3. Advent - occurs in November/December and is seen as preparation for Christmas and the birth of Christ.br>
  4. Lent - occurs in February and April and is a 40 day period of fasting and abstinence used to signify Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness before he began his ministry and the Jew’s 40 years wandering after the Exodus from Egypt.
  5. Ascension Day - occurs for 40 days after Easter to commemorate Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. Pentecost comes ten days later and signifies the beginning of the church when God sent the Holy Spirit to all of Christ’s apostles.
  6. Sunday - the origin of this special day of the week is with the Sabbath day of the Jewish faith which came to represent Christ’s resurrection for Christians.
