OTHER SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

PAUL

He believed that Jesus was sent by God to reveal the Good News to the Gentiles. His ideas took several forms. First was that of salvation in Christ. He said those who believe in Christ have this force of salvation transferred to themselves. Second was the concept of faith. This begins by hearing the words of Christ and concludes by submitting to it. Faith is a gift of God and we are free in response to it. Third and finally is ethics. A new life in Christ is in no way a release from the Christian’s obligations to behave according to the norms of the new life.

JOHN

John maintained that one obtains eternal life from the knowledge of God and Christ. Truth then is the eternal reality of all that is permanent in the Father’s world beyond Himself. All the signs of Jesus’ mission are brought together in the resurrection, his life-giving death.
