Understanding The Food Label

Most foods in the grocery stores must have a nutrition label and an ingredient list, per the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). These labels (look for Nutrition Facts on the package) have specific requirements and can help people make more informed decisions about the foods they are choosing.

In addition, the words used on the label to describe the product, such as "Lite" or "Low Fat" are also defined by the FDA. They can only be used if a food item meets the standards set by the government.

The following are some definitions used on many products and what they mean:

1. Fat Free: Less than 0.5 gram of fat per serving.

2. Low Fat: 3 grams of fat (or less) per serving.

3. Lean: Less than 10 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat and 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving.

4. Light (Lite): One third less calories or no more than half the fat of the higher-calorie, higher-fat version; or no more than half the sodium of the higher-sodium version.

5. Cholesterol Free: Less than 2 milligrams of cholesterol and 2 grams (or less) of saturated fat per serving.

What Else Does The Label Tell You?

Under Nutrition Facts on the label, you'll see a listing for Total Fat which means the total number of grams of fat.

Saturated Fat is listed separately because it plays a major role in raising blood cholesterol and increases your risk of heart disease. Cholesterol, which is related to fat, is also listed. Too much cholesterol can lead to heart disease.

About Product Claims
