Yourself Fitness

Ah, the holidays! No matter how you celebrate you can be sure of one thing. Packing on pounds between the game console and the table. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a game that let you lose weight without being bored to tears? Yourself Fitness isn’t really a game it’s more of a virtual personal trainer and it’s also one of the best things to happen to the gaming industry in a long time.

We all wish we had a sexy virtual idol body at some point (I’d kill to look like Kasumi…ok maybe not kill, but….) and we’ve all tried the exercise videos, diets, books and DVDs. But if you’re like me, those things get old really fast. Yourself Fitness changes all that by keeping things new with over 500 exercises and workouts that are constantly changing. Virtual personal trainer, Maya sees you through a training program in the client mode that is tailor made for your specific fitness level.

I’m not saying any of this without actually having use the program. I’m proud to say that I went from 227lbs. to 216lbs. in only 21 workouts. I’m saying this now before I lose anybody because as you can see I have been overweight and still am, so I know the difficulty in getting into one of these exercise programs. But I also want you to know that Yourself Fitness actually works if you see it through.

When you begin Yourself Fitness your fitness level will be tested by Maya to determine just what you need in a workout. She will then help you to set up a workout calendar to fit into your schedule. You can set workout times from fifteen minutes up to an hour. You can schedule workouts for any day of the week and change that whenever you want. I like that kind of flexibility because I don’t always have the ability to squeeze a workout in if I’m busy.

Once everything is set up and you begin your first workout you’ll be able to choose the music, workout setting and the fitness equipment that you already own and want to use in your workout. It’s great that the Yourself Fitness program is adaptable to make use of fitness equipment because it adds a whole lot more variety that lets you focus on building strength, flexibility or focus on what ever you want within your workout.

Each session begins with a warmup followed by the actual exercise program. Thankfully there’s a bar at the bottom of the screen that lets you see how long you’ll be doing a particular exercise. Knowing how far you have to push yourself before reaching the end of an exercise seems to make it easier to get to the end. Yourself Fitness also works in rest breaks to let you catch your breath and water breaks… thank goodness because you’ll need them. Maya will ask you how you’re doing between rest breaks to determine how to adjust the program for the next time so that she can lower or raise the difficulty level.

During each workout if you’re having trouble figuring out how to do an exercise all you need to do is let Maya know by accessing the tutorial mode where she will explain in detail how the moves are done. She’ll also show you too by using a computer model to illustrate the exact movements. You can’t get that from an exercise video! I’m so glad that Respondesign thought to incorporate the tutorial into Yourself Fitness because a lot of times with DVDs or other home methods you can get things wrong and get hurt.

Yourself Fitness is an excellent buy for those who really want to shed pounds. In addition to the exercise fitness sections there is also a meditation garden where you can do a relaxing Yoga workout and over 4,500 recipes to help you get on the road to eat right, too. You don’t have to use any of these extras but they are nice addition that you might wanna make use of. I know that Yourself Fitness works from experience and I’d recommend it to anyone at any fitness level. I have bad knees and I still found it easy to use and a lot of fun. I also like the fact that at the beginning of the workout Maya asks how you’re feeling. This adjusts how much encouragement she’ll give you through the workout. For those who get strength from working out with a partner, this is the next best thing to having someone with you.

With exercises that range from Pilates to Yoga and in such a wide variety workouts in Yourself Fitness never seem to become boring. And on top of it all Maya keeps track of your performance and improvements and you can look to see how much better you’re doing in weight and fitness ability from a graph that shows improved amount of crunches, squats, weight and more. I can’t do anything but praise Yourself Fitness even if the music isn’t the best. That would be my only complaint and maybe they’ll fix that in the next version. If you’re looking for a fun workout with a lot of variety and flexibility give this one a shot. I can almost guarantee you’ll love it.
