John and Mary Magdalene

John Brooks was born 29 Jan. 1767, in N.J., and died 26 Nov. 1837 in Alexander Tp., Athens Co., OH. His parents were William Brooks and Jerusha ?. John was married first to Jane Graham, appr. 1785, in N.J. She died in 1800, in Athens Co., OH., and is buried near their first log cabin in Alexander Township (then known as Southtown). The family was one of the first settlers in the area, moving to Athens Co., OH. in 1797, from NJ., with the Matthew Haning family. They came by flatboats, stopping off in Marietta until the Indians were appeased. Children of John and Jane are; - Rebecca--b. 19 May 1790, Athens Co., OH.

On 3 Jul. 1801, in Athens Co., OH., John wed Mary Magdalene Haning. She was born 20 Feb. 1784, in NJ., died 6 Sept. 1863, in Alexander Twp., Athens Co., OH.. Her parents were Matthew (Haney) Haning and Margaret McKinney. They lived in a log house near Wood Lake, which was built about 1802 and which was still standing in 1982, though it was in the last stages of ruin. John and Mary are buried in the Brooks Cemetary.
