Chapter thirty eight

Zac curled his hands around the joint, then catching the lighter.

Zac Hanson giggled.

"Your sposed to wait til afterwards to be happy dude."

Zac Dentra smiled at his friend.

"Kay then, how do I like..."

"You know how you breath air?"

"Uh...duh?"

"Do it that way, only don't suck in a big mouthful, otherwise you get a nasty surprise. Just a little one."

He handed it to Zac H.

His friend giggled.

Lifting it up to his lips, Zac Hanson paused.

"Just purt it...there...dude just..."

Zac Dentra assisted his friend.

"Now don't act like your taking a deep fresh breath of mountain air!"

He watched as Zac inhaled, then sat coughing and sputtering for breath.

"You okay?"

His friend nodded, eyes wide, still coughing.

"Told you not to inhale big man."

Zac hanson nodded his friends way.

"So."

"Not my fault if you kill yourself the first time round."

"I won't."

"Did you get any?"

Zac Hanson shrugged.

"Sit for a sec...then we'll do it again."

"D?"

"What."

"Are you going to?"

Zac Dentra had thought about it for hours before this. He wanted to stay clean, wanted to be able to stay normal so he could make sure his friend didn't do something stupid.

"Are you?"

Even though Zac had long since conquered it, he couldn't help but wonder.

"ZAC!?"

"I don't know why I'm doing this. With you!"

Zac Hanson giggled as his friend took a drag.

"D! How'd you do that??"

Rolling his eyes without exhaling, he shrugged.

Finally letting out a deep breath, Zac Dentra handed the pot back to his friend.

"This time, just a little one!"

Zac Hanson inhaled.

This time only wincing as the smoke stung.

"Hold it in."

Zac Hanson tapped his foot.

"Kay."

Letting it out in one big exhale, Zac smiled.

"Wow."

"Shut up."

"D! I did it!"

"Hasn't even kicked in yet. Wait a couple minutes."

The two sat on the sofa, passing the joint back and forth between eachother.

"You staying here tonight?"

Mercy sat at the kitchen table, next to Dorin.

"I'm going to the movie with tay, but tonight I spose I'm staying. Don't have anything better to do."

Dorin sat over his dinner.

"I talked to jem."

Mercy looked up from her magazine.

"And?"

"I think he'd doing pot."

"There are a lot worse things he could be doing."

"I know. But still."

"Be happy he's not doing them."

"Nikki I think."

"Nikki has nothing to do with it, it's the people she's taken him to that do it."

"What now then?"

"Door, he's not going to leave us, or the band."

Jeremy sat on the floor. They had moved, to a cheaper apartment, just because they were having a hard time keeping money. No specific reasons.

They had sold most of their furniture, to pay rent, for food, or pot. He sat in front of the television, which sat on a small stack of wobbly boxes in the living room. There was one chair, a lamp, and the kitchen was furnished with two chairs. His and Nikki's bedroom had lost it's nightstands, dressers, and bed frame, and now, all that remained was a mattress, that held 4 or 5 blankets.

He sighed.

Nikki wouldn't be home for another couple hours.

He now regreted giving Zac what he had. He was the one that wanted non of this too happen, but he couldn't help it. It was hard enough.

Stress was bad. He was expected to be growing up, to be getting older and more mature. He couldn't do that either.

Lately, for some odd reason, he had been pointed at, and stared at by tons of giggling girls. He felt....surrounded. Something like a hanson.

From what he'd heard, it was only the begining.

His grades were bad, almost failing, and he knew it wasn't from any thing in his personal life.

He really didn't know what to do anymore. Like, nikki wanted them to plan out a future, and start a family, and he wanted a career in music, but he also knew he wanted education.

Stress.

That became a new explanation.

"Where's Zac?"

Taylor looked up from his homework.

"He's over at the Dentra's."

"Oh."

Taylor began on another math problem.

Almost 17, and still having to do math.

"What are you doing?"

"Homework."

Isaac sat down next to his brother.

He had technically finished his last year of homeschooling last year, although, he occasionally picked up a problem or two.

"Need help?"

"Nagh, just math."

Taylor sat thinking.

"Math bites man."

"Tell me about it."

"Wanna go do something?"

"Can't. I have to finish this, then I'm going to mey's."

"For what?"

"Movie."

"Tell Zac he needs to come home okay."

They sat on the sofa, Zac Dentra, eyes closed, and taking deep breaths.

They had finished off the bag. There hadn't been that much in there, but still enough.

Zac Hanson had his head resting on the arm, Shaking his head occasionally.

"D man."

Zac Dentra now felt horribly guilty. He kept assuring himself it would not happen again. Would not.

His friend giggled.

He had only panicked once, and that was when he couldn't see straight.

It passed though, and now, he lay tired, and un observing of the room around him.

"We really need to get a tv in here D dude.."

Zac Hanson giggled again.

"Shh Zac. Just shut up."

More giggles.

"Shut up already."

Zac hanson smiled wide and giggled more.

"I've created a monster."

Zac Hanson stood.

"How long do we have to stay here D?"

"All night."

"Won't everyone get worried?"

"Nope."

"What do you mean he's not over here?"

Taylor looked at Mercy in awe.

"No! He has to be here! Where's your little bro?"

Taylor threw back his head.

"DAMNIT!"

"What Tay?"

Taylor let out a long line of swear words and slammed his hands down on the sofa.

"He said he was going here."

"My little brother said they were going to yours."

Dorin walked from the kitchen.

"What about Zac?"

Mercy sighed.

"Not here...or there."

Dorin frowned.

"Well maybe they just went to a friends house or something."

Taylor shrugged.

"You ready mey?"

Mercy picked up a jacket that was laying on the back of the sofa and walked to the front door with Taylor.

"have fun you two."

Dorin sat down on the sofa, holding a text book and switching on a light.

"So which movie do you want to see then?"

Mercy laughed as Taylor read off the list of movies playing at the theatre.

"None of those!"

He smiled. If he'd of known those movies were playing, he wouldn't have come. They were all on the verge of insanely cheesy.

She giggled.

"Dinner then?"

She grabbed his hand.

"Well sure!"

The two strode off, hand in hand.

"I have a headache."

"You shouldn't."

"But I do."

Zac hanson's eyes were closed. His new position, curled up in the corner.

"I'm tired D."

"Don't sleep."

"but I'm tired.

"Don't sleep, you'll get nightmares."

"So."

"Bad ones."

"Like what?"

"You don't want to know. Just don't sleep."

Zac Hanson wasn't going to obey. His eyes remained closed, his breathing getting steady and slow.

"Hannnnn."

"mmmmm?"

"Don't sleep."

"mmmm."

Zac Dentra listened to his friend. Guilt had finally struck him, only because he knew what would happen if someone found out.

He himself hadn't enjoyed everything that had happened to him when he had been wrapped up in the drug situation.

Now, he wondered if his friend would see it the same way he had.

"Han."

Zac Dentra waited for a response.

When none came, he walked to the table, picking up any garbage they had left.

Putting it all in his backpack, he walked back to the sofa.

Climbing on to it, he stretched out, letting his body sink into the fabric.

When sleep came, images of crying children and dark streets came to him. Images of hate, death, and sadness.

He'd never had a dream like that before.

Mercy sat across from Taylor as they ate.

"So Tay. What's up for next weekend eh?"

Mercy smiled at him.

"Ever wondered what's gonna happen mey?"

"Whatya mean?"

"Well, like ever wondered where our brothers are going to go, or if we'll always be together, or if something so unexpected will happen?"

"Your strange."

"No, seriously. Have you ever wondered that? Like what is going to happen to everyone?"

Mercy cocked her head.

"Sometimes I wonder what's going to happen to our music. Where it's going to take us."

"Ever wondered about people?"

"Of course!"

"Me?"

Mercy paused.

"What do you mean?"

"Do you ever wonder what's going to happen to me?"

Mercy sat still.

"That's a strange question."

"Well. It's not that hard to answer is it?"

"No."

"So?"

"Well, yeah, I do, but, taylor, I mean."

"I know."

"Know what."

"That it's hard to talk about."

"So then do you wonder about me?"

"All the time."
