Three beeps went off at different times, all would be followed by
another, and another. They all had their own rhythm. The hospital smelled. Smelled like old
people and dying people, and only now did Zac realize how much he hated that smell. The smell
of sickness and babies and clean. He couldn't open his eyes. Something held them shut, and
at first, he had panicked, not being able to open your eyes to see where you were was
unsettling. The beeps continued. He heard footsteps and voices, some of which he thought
he could recognize, some he couldn't. He tried to open his eyes again and realized the pain
that shot through his head. He tried to breath in but he couldn't, again he panicked until he
realized that a machine was doing it for him. A machine was pumping oxygen into his
lungs. He felt someone's hand on his and he twisted his fingers to touch it. He heard a
frantic call and listened as a few more voices entered the room. Someone touched his
forehead and another, gently pulled tape from off his eyelids. He cringed at the slight discomfort
and waited until it passed. Someone felt his forehead with their hand and gently pulled on
one eyelid. It popped open, and relieved he was. Looking around as best he could he
spotted his mother, who stood by him, and some man and woman he didn't know. Zac
waited patiently for them to pull the other eyelid up, but they didn't move, instead they checked
dials and nobs. Blinking, Zac tried to move more but was held down not only by the doctor,
but by the soreness of every muscle in his body. Everything hurt, and when he made that slight
attempt to move it ached more. His eyes drooped, and he struggled to hold them
open. In less then a minute Zac Hanson was sleeping again. Taylor jerked Isaac from the car and drug him up the stairs to Isaac's
apartment. "What the fuck is your problem Isaac!" Throwing his brother down on the
sofa Taylor slammed the door shut behind them. "God! Isaac! Did you SEE what you did to
him? How the hell could you do that?!" Isaac placed his head in his hands and shook his
head. "God damnit I don't know." "Fuck Isaac! He's a person!" "For all the shit he's
done Taylor he deserved it!" Isaac stood up and yelled at his brother. Shoving him down
again Taylor walked around to the front. "My god Isaac. Nothing he did was deserving of
that." Taylor sighed as he waited for a response. "Taylor he deserv_" "NO HE
DIDN'T! Isaac! Look at what you did to him! YOUR BROTHER! He did all that to me too
Ike, but I didn't do that to him! Christ Isaac what's gotten into you!?" Isaac slammed his fist
down on the table in front of him. "Why are you blaming this all on me?! God
damnit!" "Isaac!" Taylor sat down next to his brother. "Don't you get it. You just did
something horrible. Something that he didn't deserve Ike. You just changed everything." "At
least he'll have respect for me." "He won't! Isaac he won't! He'll fear you now! That is so
different then respect!" Isaac shook his head. They both looked up as the phone
rung. "Leave it we're talking." "I don't have an answering machine." Isaac walked to
the phone. "Hello?" There was a long pause. Isaac blinked. His face went
pale. "What is it Ike?" Isaac said goodbye and fumbled to put the phone back on the
hook. "Isaac what is it." "Oh fuck Taylor." "What!" "Christ." "ISAAC
WHAT!" Taylor looked up worriedly at his brother. "Tay. We need to go down to the
hospital okay. And on the way there. We're going to have a very very long talk
alright." They had managed to find
a babysitter for the distraught Avery, and Tristan, Jessica Avery and Zoe found another one.
Taylor had not yet arrived, but Diana was sure the scene to come would not be pretty.
Walker held her while she cried, sobbing and wiping her nose, crying and weeping.
Doctors walked in and out of Zac Hanson's room, Making notes on their pads and saying
things were going well. Very well surprisingly. Zac Dentra was three doors down, where, he
was being watched 24 hours. His breathing had shut down, and had caused them to leave him
non stop on a respirator, his head was firmly braced, and tubes ran from all areas of his
blanketed body. He had had lung problems, and so far there had been no activity in the brain.
If either of them knew the extent of the crash they would have both been devestated. Diana
had the feeling that, despite all the quote un-quote advances and progress Zac Dentra was
making, he was going to come out of this, not quite the same, if he came out at all. She was
quite greatful however that her own son had made it out alright, with the technical broken ribs,
and fractured leg, he had done the best out of the four. Thinking of the four Diana let out
another sob. She looked up and saw Isaac quietly leading Taylor. Neither of them spoke
until they arrived directly in front of their parents. Taylor looked up. "Mom." Diana
looked up. "Is Mey okay." Taylor's voice quavered quite noticably as he said it.
Looking back behind Taylor, Diana looked at Isaac with questioning eyes. He shrugged
and mouthed to her. "I couldn't do it." She sighed and choked back tears. "Taylor
honey." Tears sprang out on his face. "Taylor honey no_" Diana swallowed
hard. "No honey Mey isn't alright. Tay she's. No Tay." Taylor's lip quivered and he
inhaled deep. "Taylor. Taylor honey." "Mom just say it." She sobbed. "Taylor
Mey didn't make it." He dropped to his knees hard and fell from there. He lay, legs
tucked under him, arms outstretched, and his head in his arms. Diana sobbed more loudly
and bent over to help him. Isaac sat down by Taylor and rested one hand on his
back. Sobs racked Taylor's body and Isaac felt tears spring to his eyes. Tears dripped
onto the cold tile, beginning to form a fairly good sized puddle. "Taylor." Isaac bent
down to talk to him at floor level. A small trickle of blood streamed off of his chin. He was
biting his lower lip so hard it was bleeding. "Taylor stop doing that your going to bite right
through." Isaac reached down and wiped the blood of his brother's face. Looking up
pleadingly at his parents, Isaac shrugged. None of them knew what to do. The other eye was
still fairly swollen shut. He couldn't remember why, but figured it had something to do with the
accident. He tried looking around the room to find Mercy, his friend, or even Arianna, but to the
disappointment of himself, they weren't. He hoped they were all okay, and that, things would be
alright when they got out. A smiling nurse walked up beside him, and spoke clearly enough
for him to hear. "Okay. Later today, if the doctor thinks it's cool, we're going to take that
tube outta your throat alright." He nodded slightly, just like he had been told he could.
"But he won't be back for rounds for about an hour alright?" He nodded again. He
saw his mother once again and wondered just how long he had been here. She reached
down and stroked his head. "You sure are a good kid." He pulled a smile and
frowned. "Well you rest and get better. Me and your father, we're going to run and take the
babysitter some money and food and clothing for the kids. But we'll be back soon
alright?" He smiled. Waving goodbye she walked out of his room. He had gotten
used to not having to breath, but what he wouldn't do for a cheesburger. He smiled and
closed his eyes. Falling asleep he dreamed of an audience full of screaming girls, him, Taylor
and Isaac jamming away, and sweating up a storm. "Taylor. Do you want me to stay
here." Taylor's gaze remained fixed on the door handle. "Taylor you do not do this. Do
not. I'm not going to lose you too you go that. I don't want you going off in that little world
where people go. You stay right here on earth. I need you Tay." Taylor closed his
eyes. There were no more tears. It seemed he had left them all on the floor of the hospital,
and had remained silent from there. Isaac was sure there was a whole lot of questions and
emotions balled up in Taylor gut right now, and unfortunatly, he wasn't going to let them
out. "Taylor, I wish I could do something for you." He watched as Taylor blinked. "I
wish that all of this was a really bad dream instead of what it is, and I don't think you
understand, but I'm hurting too alright. I hurt too, and Mercy, I loved her too okay Taylor.
Maybe not as much as you, and maybe not to the extent in which you did, but she meant
something to me too." Taylor looked up and out the window to the door of the
house. Isaac sighed. "Taylor you can't hold all
this in you know. You have to let it out and you have to tell someone. Please?" Taylor shook
his head slowly. Opening the car door silently he stepped out onto the wet pavement.
Walking to the front door he lazily stepped in, leaving the door open as he made his way to his
room. Isaac watched his brother with a steady gaze, then rested his head on the steering
wheel, letting out a sigh and shaking his head.
"What the HELL do
you think your doing."
Diana let out a sob and turned to her husband.
Zac
woke up, this time understanding completely where he was, the hospital. He could even hear
much more clearly now and he could see really well out of his one eye.
Isaac pulled up outside of the
Hanson house. Switching off the engine, he sighed.
