Led Zeppelin-These guys are the greatest band from the Seventies, and nobody tops them. They had the best sound...screamin guitar and vocals mixed with sweet low end bass and rock steady drumming. The Rhythms were explosive, the melodies classic, and the lyrics powerful. Check these guys out if you're not yet turned on.
Foo Fighters-These guys should have been here a few years before they arrived, but they still work. They're grunge and that's all there is to it. Grunge is what i started getting in to when I really got interested in music. So I started listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam and all that, but I loved Dave Grohl, so I followed him into this group with high hopes, and to great things. Just sit back and listen...these guys know what they're doing.
Weezer-One of the greates bands to come out of my sixth grade year. They were dirty skaters and didn't care. I love their first album, and Pinkerton is pretty good too. It amazes me what they do with what they have, and their songs are so great and awesome you hardly forget that they're so simple.
Sunny Day Real Estate-I got turned on to these guys by Will, because he was so obsessed with Foo Fighters and where everyone in it had come from. William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel played in these guys and they have some pretty good stuff. A very nice band with a very different sound, kinda like Pick Floyd sometimes. They have a lot of odd time stuff, in strange meters like 5/4 and 7/8 and 6/8, instead of the usual 4/4 or 12/8 stuff. It's confusing stuff to the unnacostumed listener, but to me, it's sheer greatness.
Royal Crown Revue-Swing. Swing is back. From the '30's and '40's. These guys add their own twist to some swing standards and make a new sound with an old twist. It's very very good, so good that I want I want I want!!! The musicians in this group don't try to add all kinda of modern tehno crap. It's just basic swing; Saxes, Trumpets, Trombones, walking bass lines, piano, very light guitar (except in some of their own newer stff, but it still sounds good) and a good old fashioned drumset, not some tech-pad that a guy with a computer and a midi could reproduce.
The Doors-Another crazy band that I love. Something about them...Jim Morrison is all there is to it. I love Jim. Jim is the man. He's still out there, living it up with Elvis and Janis and Jimi and John Bonham and Jerry Garcia. Believe it.
Smashing Pumpkins-Before they went techno they were my favorite band. Their old stuff is much better than the newer stuff, which is pretty kickin'. I was very sorry to hear it when the kicked Jimmy Chamberlain out but hey, that's what happens. I'm psyched that they're back to normal and with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron.
Jane's Addiction-Three Days. Best song. That's all there is to that.
Phish-Oh wow, I don't have to explain them. They're never on the radio, you never see them on MTV, you never see huge concert posters with their name in huge letters, yet they have a huge huge following, just like The Dead did. Wow Wow is all I'm gonna say.
Reel Big Fish-Okay, so maybe not the best ska band out there, or the best example of what ska is, but they remind me of Chicago, and I love them, plus we have tried to play "Beer" a few times. They aren't that bad.
The Kinetics-The What? The Kinetics, a ska band from St. Louis, you know, where we're from. It's not like I hate all ska, okay? These people are really nice and not that bad for as young a band as they are. In fact, I'm in love with Selena Marshall, the Trumpet player, so back off!! I see things happening to these guys in the future.
The Pacific Street Parkers-Okay, so I've only heard them live once and on a tape once, but they had gotten so much better since i had heard the tape when I saw them at Son of Ska O Rama. Plus I met my sister's friend's Room mate's girlfriend (figure that one out!!) and she's pretty nice. They had a good sound because they had lots of horns so all the bad ones were covered up by good ones.
Deevo-Whip it, whip it good. The only '80's band you'll see on this page. So start liking it or leave!!
Jimi Hendrix-yes
Chicago-These guys blow me away. How they kept a horn section really bugs me, because as far as I know, that can't be done. But man do I love them. Wowwee, Zappo, kickass.
Blood, Sweat and Tears-Another group like Chicago only different. These guys were tight. If you listen to some of their stuff, the horns play very tuff little licks in unison...like 16th notes and 24th notes. It's incredible to hear them play-How I would love to see them live one of these days.
The Eagles-Believe it or not, but my favorite Eagles song isn't Hotel California, I actually have the cd and listened to everything else on it. I also got Hell Freezes Over, and so my fave song of theirs is New York Minute. A New York minute is, of course, the time it takes for the guy behind you to honk after the light has turned green.
The Grateful Dead-You knew it was coming so why did you ignore it? The Dead are always going to be really big, no denying it. So just settle down and sit back and enjoy them.
Soungarden-I was real upset when they broke up because I loved them so. They just have so much talent that it's not even funny...it makes a grown man weep. I love them love them love them. I don't wanna talk about it anymore.
Blind Melon-Yes, I know, nobody cares about them anymore, but I still think they rock, and more than just the schoolhouse. They remind me of, oh I dunno...LED ZEP!!! Hey, these guys knew what they were doing musically.
Gerry Rafferty-Well, okay, one song, and only because the Foo covered it. Baker Street. Love it!!
Nirvana-Head bangin, rip snortin', bellyachin' grunge. Grunge grunge grunge. I'm grungy, Will's grungy, Hava's grungy. Grunge is still good. Grunge forever.
The Stage Customs-A good name...maybe even a good sound...
K.C. and The Sunshine Band...just kidding
