A poem I wrote after the 1999-00 season

Ballad for the Flyers

The season begins with quite a rough start.

It appears that this team is falling apart.

They soon find their skates and turn it around.

It seems that this team is Stanley Cup bound!

But, once again, things begin to go down,

Transforming our smiles to depressing frowns.

Now here comes even more saddening news,

Coach Neilson’s sickness is more than the flu!

Cancer, they call it, a deadly disease.

Somebody answer this team’s good-luck pleas!

A promise of security from Clarkie is made!

But, the next week, instead, he makes a big trade?

So, it’s out with the old, and in with the new.

Rod Brind’Amour has gone for Keith Primeau.

As Neilson’s health begins to diminish,

He steps down, and his season comes to a finish.

New coach Craig Ramsey is given the job,

To push aside all the pain making their heads throb.

And Neilson is given our support and our love,

Battling the hands reaching down from above.

As he fights the cancer, the Flyers fight other teams,

Hoping this season will fulfill all their dreams.

Some troubles with management begin to arise,

But nothing will stray them from their desired prize.

Completing the season with a great little run,

The Eastern Conference title this team has just won!

Time for round one, which could be a tough task,

To get the puck past the guy wearing the mask.

Although the Dominator played very well,

At the end of the series you just couldn’t tell.

For the Sabres are left saddened and blue,

‘Cause the Flyers are moving on to round two.

Bring on the Penguins, the next job at hand.

But the series doesn’t begin as the Flyers had planned.

They go down two straight to this Pittsburgh team.

These Flyers, however, won’t give up on their dream.

They rebound and win four games in a row,

Putting away their black and gold foes.

Now they move on to round number three,

To face that red team from New Jersey.

They go up on the Devils three games to one.

It appears that this series is just about done.

Then, out of nowhere, Jersey regains its ground,

And, winning two games turns the series around.

Tied at three each, it comes down to one game.

The winners, perhaps, on the Cup could have their names.

If they win in the Finals against the West,

They’ll be hailed all around as being the best.

Both teams come out ready and dying to win.

The Philly crowd cheers as the action begins.

Wild and roaring, they push their team on,

Trying to show they believe they belong,

In the Stanley Cup Finals, and taking it all.

Rick Tocchet scores, answering Philly’s call.

Knotting the game at one goal per side,

This Philadelphia team has nothing to hide.

The minutes pass by, seconds tick down.

They must send the Devils out of their town!

Each team needs only to score one more goal,

To fuel their fire with something like coal.

Then someone breaks loose, in the net goes the puck.

New Jersey scores, perhaps with some luck.

As time fades away, all hopes disappear.

The final buzzer sounds, ending the year.
