Absalom Adams Jr. and Wife

Absalom Adams, Jr. was born circa 1755, probably in Fauquier County, Virginia. His parents were Absalom Adams, Sr. and Elizabeth (Fothergill).

Absalom probably grew to manhood in Fauquier County. It is there that he probably married in about 1775. No record of his marriage has been found, and his wife's name is not known. Absalom is believed to have had at least eleven children.

By the 1780's, Absalom and his family have moved to Culpeper County, Virginia, where he is found in the tax list in 1782-1787.

By 1791, Absalom Adams Jr. has emigrated to Fayette County, Kentucky. Absalom continued on the Fayette County tax lists, and in 1800 he was captain of a company of militia. He continued to be listed as Captain Adams through 1807. Militia's were formed from our earliest history for the protection of the settlers from whatever dangers they encountered. Drill practices were held to help the men organize their defenses and plan methods of protecting their homes and families. These practices also gave the men a chance to get together just to talk and enjoy themselves. Militia musters sometimes proved to be social outings, as families often accompanied their soldiers to the drill practice and shared picnic lunches. The newspapers even announced dinners to be served by various militias.

By 1797, Absalom owned 100 acres of first-rate land on David's Fork of Elkhorn Creek. In 1808, he is listed with 125 acres. This additional 25 acres probably was the land to which, in 1826, Abner Wilson gave a deed to Absalom's heirs in order to make a clear title (Fayette County Deed Book 2: page 125).

Absalom's wife apparently died between the 1820 census and Absalom's death in 1823. She is not mentioned in any deeds or in the settlement of his estate at his death. Captain Absalom Adams apparently died in late November or early December 1823, when the above deed from Abner Wilson was made. The tax list does not list his estate as tax lists sometimes do.
