Subject: Punky, Lew & Achi 2 in Rio
Hi Mark and everyone: We now have reservations to fly United Airlines from
Rio de Janeiro to Miami arriving Monday at 4:40am April 14, the last day
that Achi's permanent resident visa is valid to enter the U.S.A. I am still
waiting for a call from a air cargo shipping agent, our last resort, to find
out if he can get Critter shipped at an affordable price. He said he thinks
he can get it done for $700, if I break the bike down for a smaller crate
and have it shipped to New York or Washington D.C. instead of Miami. That's
a long way from Miami, but at least in America. But, if the agent isn't
successful I'll be forced to say goodbye and leave Critter in Brazil. All
other efforts to get shipping by air or sea info have yielded prices I can't
afford in the area of $1,400-$2,300 and endless frustration. The travel
agency where we made reservations wouldn't accept my VISA debit card, only
credit cards. Had to draw money from an ATM @ the maximum allowed $300/day
to get the funds. Have to go to the Brazilian Agriculture office Monday or
Tuesday to get Punky's required health documents to travel. He already has a
health certificate and vaccinations from a local vet. No one knows how many
miles Critter can go before throwing a rod and destroying the engine. Thanks
to Mark Wilson for his much needed donation. Hope to see you soon in
Atlanta. If we arrive in Miami and the bike is in New York, it will add to
our difficulties. America and the world has changed significantly since
Punky and I departed in 2001. Terrorism struck New York and D.C., war in
Afghanistan and now in Iraq. Who knows if Syria, Iran or North Korea are
next on the list. I understand from news reports that America is not quite
the same anymore, because of these events. Laws have changed and people are
not quite as secure and free as they used to be. I sincerely hope Osama Bin
Laden and Saddam Hussein are permanently removed from the face of the earth
as well as the scourge of terrorism. We will have much to reflect on upon
our return. The difficulties we've faced have been a real test of the
strength of mine and Achi's committment and Punky's durability. What a dog.
Later, amigos and amigas.
