MESSAGE NUMBER 1. (apparently discribing situation from a last couple days -
right now THEY ARE IN ECUADOR .. GLOBERIDERS)
Hi everyone: We are in Salento, Colombia. Met with 2 BMW GS riders, Tiberio
and Camilo, from Medillin. They were very nice and escorted us on a great
highway and dirt ride in this area. Fantastically beautiful mountains and
valleys. No problems so far. We are riding to Cali tomorrow, then heading
for Quito, Ecuador. All is well. Later.

MESSAGE NUMBER 2.
Lew and I made it acorss the border with Ecuador today. there was some
serious guerilla activity south of the town of Popayan in columbia early
this morning. first, after leaving Popayan going south we came across a
burned bus about to be towed. supposedly guerillas did that over night... no
one killed. further south, perhaps about 120 km, serious trafic jam for
about 2 km. another bus burned, but this time a bunch of trucks lined across
the road diagonally, all with slashed tires... you can immagine the effect.
nothing but motorcycles could pass, and even that was difficult. Army all
over the place... truckers changing tires, but there was so many of them...
total chaos. this thing had happened at 4 or 5 am, it was already 10 when we
made it there, and nothing was moving. Again, no one got killed, have no
idea what guerillas did with the people from the bus. Other thatn that, we
did not encounter any problems.
this is important, consering Lew...
Lew went down today on a muddy turn, got his right foot cought under the
bike. got up, started the bike, and went down again... did not notice that
front brake lever was stuck... his foot does not look too good... all blue
and swollen. I think he will have to stay here for few days. I will stay
with him tommorow, make sure the foot is not broken. He rode like this for
most of the day, did not want to turn around to popayan.
Crossing into Ecuador was totaly painless, but I had to use my charms on the
custom officials. woman in the window wanted Librettas, I told her that
carnets are not necessary for a passage overland. One of the guys then took
us to the nearby town to the main Aduana (customs) office and persuaded
other guys to give us permits. Got them for 60 days, free of charge...
everyone was really nice and very helpful. We are in a border town of Turken
or something like that... do not have a ma... it was too late to go further.
We will see tommorow how Lew feels.

MESSAGE NUMBER 3.
Please forward this to the three adresses he has given you... including the
list and this guy who manages his web site. He also asked to tell this guy
to put a connection to my site and a note saying that if anyone wants to see
good pictures from the trip to go on my site.
now... Lew has managed to brake and dislocvate his right ankle... it was a
very stresful day for the both of us. I put him and Punky on a plane to
quito... from tulkan, the border town in Ecuador. The accident happened
yesturday, in am still in colombia... read yesturday message. Today we went
to see a doc and have Xrays... fracture and serious dilocation... will need
a surgery and screws put in. the doctor wanted to do it here, but we though
it would be a better idea to go to Quito. Called embassy... got a hospityal
name.. hospital Boz Andes in Quito, an englich speaking missionary hospital.
I will ride there tomorrow. In the meantime I got to park his bike in a
private home.
I paid $10 for 10 days, after which we will see. Tried to contact Ricardo
Rocco without success... maybe e-mail will help. someone will have to come
and get this bike or put it on a truck to Quito. this is a bit too much for
me... I did the best I could.. will stay with Lew for a few days. Do not
know what will happen to Punky... embassy has given him a name of a
veterinarian who could possibly take care of him. I am glad i could help...
Lew was a bit lost. Pleas send a message to the list... maybe someone will
know someone else in Quito... Lew will need a place to stay for at least 2
months... that is if the surgery will indeed take place. do not know... will
find out tommorow. Got to go... have to send a message to ricardo.
