Smashing Pumpkins Concert Review
July 14; Bonner Springs, KS
Since they were part of the HORDE fest, they only had an hour and a half to play, but the time was well spent. Billy came out wearing all black and a big straw hat, which he later removed. James was wearing black pants and a cool printed shirt, and D'Arcy was wearing black pants with a red vine-like print going up the leg, a shirt similar to the one inside the Adore liner notes, and cat ears (?). They started off with "To Sheila" and "Behold the Night Mare," and played an amazine version of "Ava Adore." They played most of the tracks from Adore. For the first twenty minutes or so, my friends and I sat in seats seven rows back from the stage that we thought were unoccupied. But when the ticketholders came back, we treated back to our row 23 seats, despite being invited to stay (it was too crowded trying to fit six people into three seats). The Pumpkins played some Mellon Collie-era songs, including "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" and "Tonite, Tonite;" and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" followed an awesome drum solo led by Kenny Arnoff. I was hoping to hear "1979," but their time was over and they exited the stage with a thousand fans screaming after them.
