sad girl

Pop A Top

Pull a tab, pop a top
Drink the beer, but now don't stop;
When all you have has been drunk down,
Remember, there's always more in town.

Look at your wife, in her eyes is pain,
She looks as though she might go insane;
Her mind is troubled, she's quite a sight,
She's afraid you may leave here tonight.

You drink your beer, drink to forget,
The problems you have, but they're not gone yet;
So drink again, never mind her hurt,
The anguish is there, that's for cert'.

But what's she doing; she's leaving you,
She can't take the pain anymore, you fool;
Her love for you will soon be gone,
If you can't end this before the dawn.

She held her heart out in her hand,
She tried to make you understand;
But you couldn't love her, hold her close
Not even when she needed it most.

So, pop a top and pull a tab,
In her heart a knife you stab;
She can't understand why you hurt her so,
Your drinkin's fast but your lovin's slow.

The Story Behind the Poem

My husband of thirty years was an alcoholic. The pain in this poem is the pain the husband or wife of an alcoholic lives with day after day. After thirty years, I gave up and left. By then there was no more love to give. I have always tried to let the Lord lead me on my way and, at that time, I knew it was time to go. My husband quit drinking that night and has now been dry for almost 9 years. My children have a father......a father they can be proud of. I have a new life now and I am very happy but my ex-husband and I remain good friends. I am proud of him for finding his way out of the tunnel of alcoholism........it was not easy for him I'm sure.
