SMILES AS PRINCES

BATTLE IN THE SNOW

FROM GARY MORGAN IN WHISTLER, CANADA

PLAYFUL Princes Wills and Harry had a snowball fight on the first day of their skiing holiday.

They pelted each other and their bodyguards high up on Whistler Mountain, near Vancouver, Canada.

The brothers, on holiday with Prince Charles, were in ecstatic mood as they played up to curious onlookers. Cheeky Harry even winked at a crowd of women as they stopped for lunch at a restaurant half way up the slopes.

"It was so lovely to see them enjoying themselves. Wills and Harry looked relaxed and happy and had big bright smiles," said Lorna Williams, 35, from Leicestershire.

Her friend Jane Davies said: "We were a bit nervous about watching them but they seemed to love the attention."

Three Mounties skied with the royals as well as several guides. The day was interrupted for a few minutes when one of the princes broke his ski pole. Guides had to get a new pair from a midmountain repair shop.

The only other upset came from three Canadian TV crews who camped out at the bottom of the mountain to film them. Charles and his sons are staying at a house about a mile from the slopes.

Vancouver Welcomes Princes Warmly

Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry arrived in Vancouver yesterday at the start of their visit to Canada. The trio were greeted with the traditional warmth associated with their hosts. For security reasons The Prince of Wales, first in line to the throne, and Prince William, Second in line to the throne, arrived in Canada separately. Prince Charles publicly declared: I am particularly glad to be able to be here with both my sons. Both my children are looking forward to meeting more Canadians while we are in Vancouver. Prince Charles was greeted at the airport, and the hotel, with the traditional red carpet while the two younger Princes were greeted in a rather more frenetic style. The brothers, pin ups to many young girls around the globe, were greeted by dozens of young screaming girls. It was like something from the days of Beatlemania as the young girls shouted from underneath and behind placards adorned with slogans such as William we love you!. Unlike his father, Prince William is as yet unaccustomed to such a greeting and was visibly mildly embarrassed by it all. The effects of jetlag not helping in one little bit. He maintained his dignity to overcome such a shock to his system and smiled for those assembled - cheering girls, cameramen and all other admiring, and admirable, Canadians.
