"YES?!" Ms. McCann screamed. "What does Holly HAVE?!"
"Clam down, calm down," the doctor said soothingly. "No need to get upset..."
"UPSET?! No need to get UPSET?! My baby is lying in that hospital room hooked up to all that...ugh...stuff and she might need surgery and your telling me that there is no need to be UPSET?!"
The doctor walked around the desk and put his arm around the distressed women. "Shhhhhhh...it's okay..."
"No it's not," she sobbed, "my baby is going to die."
"How can you say that when you don't even know what she has?"
"I just know..."
The doctor chuckled to himself, This lady is WAY beyond herself. He thought. He saddened remembering... Why do I have to be the one to tell her?
After a few minates she had settled enough to hear it. She straightened up, "Okay, I'm ready. What is wrong with Holly?"
"It's okay my Holly-Wally...everything is going to be okay..." Holly's Granny had finally arrived. Just her presence was enough to make Holly feel better.
Holly's puffy red eyes turned upon her Granny. She was really close to her. Her Granny was her only Grandparent left living, and they seemed to share some kind of special bond. A bond that could never be broken. She hugged her Grandmother tightly, "I love you Granny."
"I love you too."
Standing yet again akwardly aside, were Dawn, Maya and Zac.
"Let's leave them for now," Dawn whispered.
Zac and Maya followed Dawn quietly out of the room and walked to the elevator.
"Wanna go to the caf?" Zac suggested.
"Can't," Maya said bluntly. "I'm broke."
"So am I," Dawn put in.
Zac fished in his pocket and produced a 10. "I was supposed to go to the store. But Holly's house was just there, so I went there instead..."
Maya and Dawn laughed.
Zac smiled smugly to himself. He loved making people laugh. It made him feel so good inside. Espashally *RNOTE: How do you spell that??* at serious times like this, were everyone could stand to feel a little better.
The elevator arrived and they made there way down to the first floor to get something, at least to drink.
Once they were seated at the table, Cokes in hand, Dawn decided to quiz Zac.
"So I guess you like Holly, eh?" she giggled.
Zac's face turned the shade of the Coke Can in front of him. He pushed his long blonde hair behind his ear. "Ummmm...no, why would you say that?"
Maya spit out her Coke. She was laughing so hard. 1 week ago, who would have thought that Dawn and I would be sitting right here embarrasing ZAC HANSON out of his mind about...Holly McCann?! This is unbelievable. Why do I always have to laugh so hard at things like this?? I'm such a ditz.
"We think that your daughter has meningitis," Docter Green's said.
"That can be deadly, right?" Mrs. MaCann sounded hysterical agian. "So my baby really is dying?"
"Calm down, Mrs. MaCann, we're not sure if that's what she has. We still have to do a couple more tests."
Still on the verge of being hystarical, her voice sounded chipped as she talked.
"I know what meningitis is but please could your tell me more about it? Is Holly going to die?"
Dr. Green looked at Mrs.MaCann with a kind of sadness. I wish I could hold her in my arms and tell her everything will be alright. Docter Green had always had a kind of crush on Mrs.MaCann, but had never done anything about it.
"DOCTOR, please tell me is Holly going to die?"
"I don't know. At this point I don't know anything for sure, NO one does. But you'll be the first one to know when we do," Docter Green said as he snapped out of his daze.
"Ok, but could you please explain to me what exactly what meningitis is?"
At least this is something I can tell her. With a slight smile the dotor started to explain, "Menigitis is an infection the surrounds the spinal cord and brain." The docter pulled out his pointer and pointed at one of the diagrams that hung on his wall. "I'll tell you the sympoms that you daughter has had; headachs, high fever and being tired all the time. These have let us to believe this is what she has."
"How would she have go it?" Mrs.MaCann asked interupting the doctor.
"Just like Mono, the most common is thought kissing. But there are many others."
"Oh....so this disease is really serouis? Because it has to do with the brain?"
"Right."
beep, beep, beep...
"Sorry that's my pager, I've got to go and check on a patient now. I'll answer all your questions when I get back. Ok?"
"Sure. Thank-you Doctor."
As Docter Green rushed down the hall to the 3rd floor he couldn't help but worry about leaving Ms.McCann. I hope she'll be Ok. That poor woman has been though so much, and I don't think she'd be able to bear lossing Holly.
"Mom," Mrs.MaCann said as she saw her mom (*Holly's granny*) sitting by Holly's bed. "I'm so glad you could make it!" she gave her mom a big hug.
"Shhhhh....Carolyn dear....Holly's going to be alright you'll see," she whispered softly. "Why don't we step out in to the hall, that way we can talk without waking Holly."
As they walked in to the destered hallway, Mrs.MaCann started to cry and she told her Mom everthing.
I sat up suddenly in bed, I was alone in my hospital room. I wonder where everyone went?
The door began to creak open.
"Holly are you awake?" a soft male voice asked.
"Zac? Is that you? Where are Maya and Dawn?"
"They we're being jerks, so I left them," he answered a-matter-of-factly.
I laughed until my stomach hurt.
"What did they do?" I finally managed to get out.
"Nothing much..." he paused. "How are you doing? I mean you seemed pretty upset until your Granny came."
"Better, I think. I don't know if I can handle any bad news right now though."
Zac took my hand and held it tight.
"Don't worry, everything will be Ok. And if something happens to go bad you'll have all your family and friends...including me..to help you through it," Zac's voice sounded so soft and heart-warming it made her feel better just have him say it was going to be Ok.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked. "We just meet, yet you are still at this glumey hospital with me. Either you're a angel or you have another motive," I smiled.
"Is my halo that noticeable?" Zac grined.
"Not really, don't worry."
We joked around for a couple more minutes, but that came to a stop as Dawn and Maya walked in to the room.
