Chapter 9

"I have to go call Ike now," Zac gave Holly's hand a final squeeze. "See you later."

Dawn and Maya came further into the room and passed Zac as he exited.

"What's his problem?" Dawn asked.

"Maybe you could tell me..."

"What THAT? No Holly, there's no point it was stupid," Maya thew here arms up in discust. "That boy needs a sence of humor," she whispered to herself.

Dawn looked down, she hadn't ment to hurt his feelings...maybe it was just because she was over-emotional, but she felt really bad about making Zac uncomfortable. She'd of hated to be put in that position. "Hey guys, I'll be back in a second I just have to go and get some...pop! Yes I need a Coke. You guys want anything?"

"No," they answered in unison.

"Okay, I'll be right back." Dawn tried not to run down the hall. Where are the phones on this floor? I thought I saw some right around here... She turned the coner and sure enough there was Zac, just putting down the reciever.

She walked slowly up to him. "Hi Zac."

His head shot up, "Oh, hi Dawn."

"Listen Zac, about the whole you and Holly thingie, we really didn't mean to embarrass you or anything, we were just teasing. We didn't think you'd take it that seriously."

"No Dawn, you shouldn't be apoligising. I should. I'm really REALLY sorry I freaked out on you guys. I didn't mean to it's just..." he looked at the white tiled floor. "Nevermind."

There was an awkward silance that lasted about 5 minates.

He pushed his golden hair behind his ears. "I don't know. But I'm really worried about her, ya know? I don't want anything to happen to her."

"It's okay Zac, I'm sure she'll be fine," Dawn reassured him. She really didn't know what to say. She hadn't expected him to dump all this on her when she first headed over to him. But now...

"Okay well, I'd better go, Ike'll be here in no more then a couple of minates, so I'd better get to the front doors. See you later."

"I'm gonna come with you. Is that okay? I need to get a Coke anyways."

"No problem," he replied and the two walked to go meet Isaac.

Ms. McCann cried into her mothers arms. "He says there is a chance Holly might die. I can't believe it!! First..."

"Suhhhhhh..." Mrs. Soutter tried to calm her worried daughter. But it was hard to do. Inside she was falling apart too...Holly was her only grandchild, the thought of losing her was just too much for her. But I have to stay strong, she thought. It will tear poor Martha apart if she knows how I feel inside.

"Mom, will you and Shelley please come with me when I talk to the doctor. I'll need someone there to back me up. This is just so difficult," Ms. McCann couldn't take it any more, she burst into a fresh flood of tears.

Tears blinded Holly's grandmother. She could no longer keep them in. They poured out like rain. If only Holly could be well...If only everything were normal... But there was no use in counting the endless lists of "If Only"'s, she would have to stay focoused on the positive.

********************

Dawn and Zac waited in the lobby (RNOTE: u no, the place where u wait in the hopital?? I think it's called the Lobby. Well,It is now!!) in silace for Isaac to come and pick Zac up.

Why am I even here? Dawn thought. We're not even talking. I just feel bad about what I did. Her eyes drifted from the blue carpet to Zac. Poor guy, he looks so worried. Holly's really lucky. Too bad she's not feeling well enough to notice how much he's aching for her to be well. He looks on the verge of crying just for some girl he just met.

Dawn had compleatly fogotten who this boy was. That he was THE Zac Hanson. She didn't even care. Right now she was too worried about Holly, and the boy sitting next to her.

Zac looked around and noticed a fimiliour person walking through the door. He stood up and walked over to him. Dawn tagged along.

"Hi Taylor. I'm ready."

Taylor glanced at his brother but his look strayed to the girl behind him. "Hi Dawn." He smiled at her.

The face that had been so bright and cheerful earlier that day had darkened and become sad, fragile and dark. He wanted to hold her, to tell her everything was going to be all right but instead he just said, "Don't worry Dawn. I'm sure Holly will be okay."

Dawn sniffed and vaguely smiled at Taylor. "Thank-you."

Zac took Taylor's hand a practically dragged him out of the hosipital. He wanted to just get home and be able to mourn in the privacy of his room.

"MOM" Mrs. MaCann cried as she and Mrs.Soutter were about to go back in to Holly's room, "How am I going to tell Holly what she has? I can't, maybe I don't have to...the docter said he might be wrong!"

"You have to hon," Mrs. Soutter spoke stroking her daughter's head, "she can't live on false hope, but if it makes you feel better I'll tell her."

Mrs.MaCann nodded, and wiped the tears from her eyes.

"I guess we should go in now, the poor dear needs to know sometime."

The twp walked slowly to Holly's room. They were dreading telling her, but they knew it had to be done.

****************************

Maya wondered aimlessly around my hospital room, she looked very uncomfortable. I didn't blame her though, I'd been candystriping for almost 3 years and still sometimes felt wierd in hospitals.

"Come sit down," I said hopping to make her feel better.

"Holly..." Maya began but stoped when my mom and Granny walked in.

"I have something important to tell you," My granny said in a low voice.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Maya get up to leave and then my mom grab her arm and whisper something in her ear. Maya's eyes grew and she sat down. Something is really really wrong. I hope Granny tells me what it is soon.

"Holly, dear, the doctor says that you have something called Meningitis."

I can't have Meningitis, Holly thought. That's a desiese babies and old people get. Not teenagers. I began to laugh thinking that it was one big joke. I looked from face to face and I began to laugh harder. They were so serious it was funny.

"It's not a joke!!" Maya screamed as she dashed out of the room.

"She's right Holly," My granny said softly. "We're still hoping that the doctor is wrong....he said he wasn't postitive what you had, but he thought that it would probably be Meningitis."

I sat in shock This isn't happening, I'm in a dream. That has to be it I'm dreaming, soon I'll wake up and be back in my fun loving life. I tryed to convince my self.

"Are you ok?" my mom asked her voice quivering.

I gave a weak shaky smile, "Yes mom I'm fine."

***********************

Maya ran down the hall, she'd had a cousin that had died from Meningitis. Holly's not going to die, SHE CAN'T!!!. It didn't matter that in her heart she knew Holly would pull though because Holly was strong, Maya couldn't push her awful thoughts out of her head.

"HEY WATCH IT!!" Dawn screached as Maya nearly ran her over, "What's the rush?"

Maya mearly gave her a tired glace.

"Do you know where Zac is?" Maya asked breathless from her running.

"He went home, why?"

"He wanted to know as soon as we found out something about Holly," Maya answered stortly. I've got to get out of this Hospital. Looking for the closed way out she said a quick snotty good-bye to Dawn and tore out of the hospital, leaving Dawn staring wonderingly after her.

"I wonder what's wrong with her?" Dawn wondered out loud and then started to walk towards Holly's room "I wonder what's wrong with Holly?"

As she walked in to Holly's room Dawn realized everyone was unbelievalbly quiet. Oh no something is really wrong. She gazed from face to face.

"What's wrong?" Dawn asked not really wanting to know the answer, but know that she would have to learn what it was eventually.

"Holly has..." Mrs. MaCann told Dawn what Holly had and how serious it was.

Dawn looked at Holly shocked. How could Holly be that sick? Dawn wondered. She's always so full of life...sure she's been tired lately but other then that she's been fine, with the exception of fainting.
