The Royals traded Rusch to the New York Mets for right-handed pitcher Dan Murray.
"It was a pretty big shock to me," Rusch said after packing his equipment bag at Kauffman Stadium. "I didn't think anything would be going on at this time of the season."
Rusch probably will pitch in middle relief for the Mets.
"Obviously, they're in a pennant race, both for first place and a wild card," Rusch said.
"I've never been in a pennant race before so it's a neat thing for a young guy like me."
Pitcher Glendon Rusch rejoined the Royals on Sunday, making a circuitous trek to Kansas City after learning of his promotion from Class AAA Omaha.
It seems that Rusch, who didn't have a car, got stuck taking a flight that routed him through Denver. He arrived in Kansas City on Saturday night but didn't join the club until Sunday.
Rusch, who was 4-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 20 starts with the Golden Spikes, gave up three runs in just 12/3 innings during an earlier stint with the Royals.
"This was unexpected," Rusch, who will pitch in long relief, said of the promotion. "I was planning on being down there for the duration.
"I just assumed that they weren't going to mess with our team since we were in the playoffs. Right when I thought that, they started calling guys up left and right."
After a few outing with the Royals and the trade of Kevin, Glendon was sent back down and will be starting on Sunday.
July 28
Glendon was called up today and will most likey pitch from the bullpen. But could become a starter if Reichert keeps haveing problems pitching.

Glendon Rusch, a left-handed pitcher who started 24 games last year for the Royals, is expected to start July 4 for the Class AAA Golden Spikes. Rusch, 24, has been in Baseball City, Fla., recovering from tendinitis in the biceps area. He pitched well in the Gulf Coast League, Hegman said, including four scoreless innings on Tuesday.
"He's pitching against 18-, 19-year-old kids," Hegman said. "He's doing what a major-league pitcher should do down there."

Rusch's ailment diagnosed
Turns out beleaguered pitcher Glendon Rusch is suffering only from tendinitis in the biceps area.
While that news isn't entirely good -- Rusch's immediate future includes a lengthy rehabilitation assignment -- it could have been worse.
So Rusch, once projected to be a mainstay in the Royals' rotation, will be shipped next week to Florida. He might not be available for the Royals, or even Class AAA Omaha, until sometime in July.
Rusch, 24, was 2-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 10 starts for the Golden Spikes.

First, he didn't make the Royals' opening-day roster. Now this.
Glendon Rusch, once projected to be a mainstay in the Royals' starting rotation, is suffering from an undisclosed biceps injury and will miss at least one start for Class AAA Omaha, Neb. Rusch, 24, will be examined by the Royals' team physician in the coming days before definitive plans are made about his future.
For now, though, one top Royals official concedes that he's concerned.
"Anytime you have problems in the shoulder area, you have to be," said Bob Hegman, the team's senior director for minor-league operations. "It sounds like tendinitis around the biceps. It's just one of those things where you take a wait-and-see approach.
"It's been bothering him for a little while. It just got to a point where he couldn't throw."
For the season, Rusch is 2-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 10 starts. He also has given up 85 hits in 601/3 innings. The Royals yanked him from today's scheduled start, and Rusch could miss two or more turns in the rotation.
