Thompson Ancestry
Airing out the dusty nooks and crannies of the family history.
Hello, I'm Sarah McUmber-House. Welcome to my genealogy pages.
I am glad you stopped in. Pull up a chair, a cushion or a piece of rug, grab a cup of coffee or whatever your favorite is, and let's get acquainted. Certainly, as with any search of ancient pasts, some of the information related here may turn out to be inaccurate or not verifyably related to my direct line of ancestry. I will make every effort to update and clarify as I come into more knowledge, and invite you to contribute anything you have that seems pertinent.
Be prepared for Dolly the micro-cat to get up on your shoulder. (Let me know if you're allergic):
(Special thanks go to my wonderful GrandMother-in-Law, Vera S. Harris, who got me started again, and my Dear Aunt Peg (Margaret ARNOLD Marlowe), who originally planted the seed of curiosity, and to my great-great grandfather, who kept a diary in 1873.)
THOMPSON, ARNOLD, CARTER, VAN DYKE
My mother's great-grandfather was Anthony THOMPSON (born April 11, 1809
- died July 2, 1883), who was originally from Hull, Yorkshire. His parents
(There was an old bible that survived a fire in about 1910 that is
inscribed
"A. Thompson 1782"...that may have been his father.)
are buried at Holy Trinity Church (probably in Hull, Yorkshire) and that is where he married a miss Ann CARTER of Louth, Lincolnshire, on 10, April,
1835. (They are both buried in Rochester, Wisconsin, USA)
Arnthony emigrated to Wisconsin, USA in early February, 1845, probably with
his brothers, on the ship NewYork, sailing from Liverpool. In his diary of
an 1873 return visit to England, he states it being 50 years since he had
been to some of the places.
It seems likely that he had several brothers - Charles, Walter, John,
possibly a Tom and another named Dove, and two sisters, one Rebecca and one
Mary. He also mentions a cousin Ben, who was born in 1808, cousins Sarah
and Ann, an Uncle William born 1800, an Uncle Wallis (who had a sister
named Ann, and a daughter named Hester.) There also seems to be a "Grandpa
North" (- perhaps his mother's father??)
Anthony and Ann had three children, Azubah b: d:1892, Arthur George b:1851 d:1921, and Albert.
----(All in the following group are buried in Pine Bluff, Arkansas)----
Arthur George THOMPSON, - married FULLER, Stella Pearl b:1858 d:1934 - she died of heart disease, but was never feeble or senile
Arthur and Stella's Children:
Anthony Carter THOMPSON (m)b:1886 d:1916 - he was killed in a truck accident while in Mexico with the Pershing Expedition against Panch Villa
Anthony Louis THOMPSON (m)b:1879 d:1922 - he died of a fever. He was somewhat estranged from the family due to marrying a woman they did not approve of.
Azubah THOMPSON (f)b:1877 d:1956 - she died of heart disease - married Frank Atwater ARNOLD
They had three children, all daughters: Margaret ARNOLD b:1906 d:198?, Elizabeth ARNOLD b:1907 d:1908 of a birth defect of the heart, and Dorothy Van Dyke Arnold b:1917 d:1995 of heart disease
Inez (f)b:1882 d:1977
- married Frank Lee ROYSTON
One big clue to relation in this search is the name "Azubah". It was a tradition in at least the Thompson family to give that name to the firstborn female in each generation. My grandmother, Azubah Thompson ARNOLD, who called herself "Zue", decided that particular practice should stop with her. I'm not sure she ever forgave her grandfather, Anthony THOMPSON, for saddling her with what she deemed a burden of a name.
Almost all of the women in this family have been short in stature and large in presence. I am probably one of the tallest at 5'8", with 5'2 being the high average I've encountered thus far.
I have reason
to believe that my grandfather, Frank A (for Atwater) Arnold (1868-1963)
live in the Pacific NorthWest, I think in the Spokane, WA area.
He met my grandmother, Azubah Thompson, while he was in Norfolk VA on
vacation. They married, after a long engagement (which she broke off twice), in October of 1904. They
lived briefly in Springfield, IL, my grandfather's hometown, and
soon moved to Pine Bluff, AR. He then moved to NM to join his
brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, in the cattle business.
