Heaps of Harry Potter Spots
Get your wands and hats ready for a whirlwind of fun! Now, where's my Quiddich broom?
Harry Potter is one of our family's favorite characters from recent literature. We're anxiously awaiting the next in the series of books (as well as the movie), and rather than re-read them for a fouth or even fifth time, we thought we'd add some dimension with some fun and learning.
He's brave. He's a hero as well as an underdog. He's funny, vulnerable (in an invincable kind of way), has some great friends, and he's a grand focus for some fun learning! Want to turn your kids' interest in Harry and his adventures into educational opportunities? Check out some of these sites:

Cameron Williams' Lesson Plan
http://www.connectingstudents.com/lessonplans/potter/cameron1.htm
What makes Harry Potter tick? comprehension, quizzes, activities, and discussion questions. Very good in depth work, with good questions to consider: How are the early years of Harry's life similar to other literary characters' lives (i.e. Cinderella, Matilda, etc.)? How could you adapt the rules for Quidditch for a typical P.E. class? Describe the change in Harry's character from the beginning to the end of the book. What effect does the irony used by the author in this book have? How would you use a 'Cloak of Invisibility'? Compare the creatures in this story to creatures of mythology, fairy tales, and legends. How could you design a model of Hogwarts?.
